Advisement & Registration
Overview
Here at SIUE, it’s policy students meet with their advisor each semester prior to registering for classes. Our advisors want to make sure you’re getting a quality college experience while reaching your academic goals. Even if you have a quick question about a specific course, or want to create an academic plan, we are happy to help!
If students have any forms needed to be filled out by their advisor, please drop your form off at the front desk and your advisor will have it completed within 24 hours for you to pick up. Your advisor may contact you should he or she have any questions.
Below, you will find ways to contact your advisor, what’s expected of you, and deadlines for the upcoming registration.
We look forward to meeting with you!
Making Your Appointment
Appointments
- Appointments are available during open hours of operation. Students will have the option to be advised in-person or remotely.
- Students must make an appointment 24 hours in advance to meet with their advisor.
- E-mail requests for scheduling an appointment are not accepted.
- Students that are 10 minutes late for their appointment will need to reschedule.
You can make an appointment in one of three ways:
- Login to Starfish through Blackboard.
- Call the CAS Advising office (phone number listed above).
- Come to the CAS Advising office (location listed above)
Sick the same day as the appointment?
The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. If you believe your illness is contagious, please don’t come to your in-person advising appointment. Instead, our advisors are more than welcome to conduct your advising appointment via phone or ZOOM.
Please understand, advisors do have the right to cancel your in-person appointment if you're visibly sick.
Student Responsibilities
Advising for Winter and Spring 2025
Students who are advised in CAS Undergraduate Advising may begin meeting with advisors for Winter & Spring 2025 advisement starting Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
Student Responsibilities with Advisement
Before the Advisement Appointment
- Explore courses you plan to take the upcoming semester via CougarNet or the Undergraduate Catalog. Both are available online through the Office of the Registrar, or through CougarNet.
- Prepare questions to ask your advisor regarding academic goals, long-term planning, career/professional opportunities, and available campus resources to assist you in being successful.
Day of the Advisement Appointment
- Please be on time! Arriving late shortens the amount of time you have with your advisor. If you are more than 10 minutes late to your appointment, you will need to reschedule.
- Have a discussion with your advisor about academic goals and performance, long-term planning, career/professional opportunities after graduation, and available campus resources to assist you in being successful.
After your Advisement Appointment
- Plan to go through CougarNet to look up the Course Reference Numbers (CRN) for each class you intend to register.
- Be in contact with your advisor should you make any course changes.
- Keep your advisor aware of any academic highlights or challenges you may encounter throughout the semester.
Advisor Availability
Advising Appointments
It is university policy for students to meet with an academic advisor every semester prior to registration for the upcoming semester. Therefore, you will need to make an appointment to see your advisor. You are able to schedule an appointment with you advisor in one of three ways:
- Going to Starfish via Blackboard. (You will need your e-id and password to login);
- Calling CAS Advising at 618-650-5525;
- Coming by the CAS Advising office in Peck Hall, room 1315.
When meeting with an advisor, a review of the academic program requirements and a discussion about academic progress toward the student’s degree will occur, along with course selection for the upcoming semester. It is the student’s responsibility to know their academic program, and highly recommended to retain all advisement materials provided by their academic advisor.
If a student is going to be late more than 10 minutes for their advising appointment, the student will need to reschedule. If a student knows they're going to be late, it's in the student's best interest to call the CAS Advising office.
Advisors regularly respond to emails, but please allow up to 2 business days. If you have a question or need general information, you may use this method to communicate with an advisor.
Phone
Generally advisors are not interrupted if they are in an appointment or on the phone. If you call expecting to speak with an advisor immediately, it may be necessary to leave a message. We attempt to return all phone calls in a relatively prompt fashion, as time and resources permit.
Drop-In Advising
Drop-In Hours
Drop-ins may be conducted via in-person, email, phone or Zoom upon request. Please contact the office or email your advisor.
Wednesday: 10:00am - 11:30am
Thursday: 1:00pm - 2:30pm
This is a first-come, first serve meeting with an academic advisor. Drop-In advising is limited to 15 minutes. Things that can be discussed during Drop-In advising: schedule changes, major/minor declaration, major/minor requirements, quick questions regarding application processes for Teacher Certification and Professional programs. Keep in mind that advisors have appointments starting at the end of Drop-In Hours.
