Below is a list of the funds that currently support the Department of Biological Sciences. For general support of the department and its programs, we particularly encourage donations to the first two of the funds listed.
Biology Department (Fund 3710): To assist in the development of the Biology Department.
Department of Biological Sciences Endowment (Fund 8149): Provides ongoing support of resources for teaching and research in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Rayhill J. Hagist Lecture Fund (Fund 4118): Funds will be disbursed for honoraria (which may include expenses) to speakers knowledgeable in the area of biological discovery or process. The lecture shall be known as the Rayhill J. Hagist Lecture in Biology.
Greenhouse Development Fund (housed in CAS) (Fund 3920): Serves as the receipts and disbursement account for the CAS Greenhouse project.
Science Building Equipment (housed in CAS) (Fund 4323): Provides funds in support of Science Building equipment purchases at SIUE.
Zahalsky Award for Excellence in Medical Technology (Fund 2013): Funds an award given to an outstanding student in Medical Technology. Restrictions: 1) Award will be made to an upper-class student in medical technology who has achieved the highest GPA at SIUE through the Fall semester of the year the award is given; 2) Student will have been accepted for clinical rotation at one of the affiliated hospitals.
Michael Levy Memorial Award Endowment (Fund 8048): Provides scholarship award(s) to full-time, junior-level Biology students based on academic achievement in the natural sciences and a grade of at least a B in Molecular Biology.
Ollie Mae Williams Award Endowment (housed in Biological Sciences) (Fund 8138): Funds a student award. Recipients shall fulfill the following qualifications: 1) American citizenship. Special consideration shall be given to residents of the Southwestern Illinois area. 2) Majors in the natural sciences (for this award defined as biology, chemistry, physics) preferred; if the applicant pool too small, add mathematics; if applicant pool still too small, add engineering. 3) A GPA of 3.000 (on a 4-point scale) or better, overall or for the most recent year at SIUE. (Most recent year at SIUE is defined as two semesters with at least 18 credits earned, and including 9 credits earned in science and engineering courses.) 4) Junior standing. 5) Priority consideration shall be given to African-American students who demonstrate success in overcoming educational and/or cultural disadvantages in preparing for a degree in Science or Engineering and whose efforts may serve as a role model for others.
Donal G. Myer Award for Outstanding Student in Sciences and Mathematics (housed in Chemistry) (Fund 8069): Generally, awarded to the "best" student in sciences and math, upon consultation with the Chairs in those departments. The award recipient will be chosen by a Committee of science and mathematics faculty appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The committee will select an appropriate student in accordance with the established criteria and procedures.
