Geography's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
Meet the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Sciences Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. The Committee was formed in Fall 2021 in order to structure, initiate, and support efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our department, SIUE, and the wider community.
Dr. Alan Black
Dr. Black is a co-leader of the GEOPATHS program. GEOPATHS is funded by the National Science Foundation. The GEOPATHS program aims to help students develop early confidence in their scientific abilities, and a sense of belonging to the geosciences that will lead them toward degree attainment and career success. The program is particularly focused on elevating underrepresented groups.
Dr. Susan Hume
Dr. Hume has published research on diversity at the geography department scale, the ethnic and national identities of Africans in the United States, African, Russian, and Ukrainian refugee resettlement, and the Bosnian community in St. Louis.
Dr. Adriana Martinez
Dr. Martinez was recently selected as an AGU LANDInG Academy fellow. This is a highly competitive, two year program that will include workshops on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that will culminate in a project to improve DEI efforts both in the Department and SIUE. SIUE Press Release.
Dr. Martinez was also appointed a Seeding Diversity Fellow. The Seeding Diversity Fellows Program is a bold initiative funded by the National Science Foundation to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion in the core values and practices of Geosciences departments at colleges and universities. The program is a customized learning experience that enables participants to learn the skills to disrupt long-standing organizational practices that impede diversity in the academic field of Geosciences in general, and in their respective academic departments in particular.
In Fall 2022 Dr. Martinez was selected to be a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Committee on Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Dr. Martinez is also a co-leader of the GEOPATHS program.
Dr. Shannon McCarragher
Dr. McCarragher joined the Department in Fall 2020 and her work focuses on Biogeography. She has quickly established relationships with a diverse group of students within her classes and in her lab.
