Student Organizations
Students can deepen their historical knowledge by participating in the history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta. Phi Alpha Theta is open to undergraduate and graduate students who excel in history. The group hosts movie nights, discussions of historical events and field trips to historic sites.
Internships
Internships for course credit are available for students who want hands-on experience in museums, archives, libraries or public history. Students in our department have completed internships at the Missouri Historical Society, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, the National Park Service, and numerous smaller museums and archives in St. Louis and throughout Illinois. Students seeking an internship are encouraged to consult the department’s internship handbook and contact the department chair.
Graduate Assistantships
Assistantships are available for graduate students in the MA and PhD programs. Graduate assistantships typically offer a tuition waiver and pay a monthly stipend. Assistants work side-by-side with faculty and instructors as teachers and researchers. For more information, please contact the director of graduate studies or the department chair.
Travel Study
History students have the opportunity to learn about the past firsthand via travel study. Faculty in the Department of History have led travel study classes to Italy, Brazil and Turkey. Travel study offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a foreign culture while gaining course credit and making lasting friendships. For more information about upcoming travel study opportunities, please contact the department chair.
