Student Awards and Scholarships
Note: in order for a student to eligible for any of Philosophy's awards and scholarships, they must be registered in Academic Works. Application deadlines for the awards and scholarships can also be found in Academic Works.
Dr. Carol A. Keene Scholarship in Philosophy
The Dr. Carol A. Keen Scholarship in Philosophy is an annual award given to an SIUE undergraduate student majoring in philosophy. The scholarship is for $2500.
Students interested in being considered for the Dr. Carol A. Keene Scholarship must meet eligibility requirements, which include: (1) being a declared major in philosophy (2) having completed 45 credit hours by the end of the Fall term immediately prior to applying for the award (3) earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.5 in philosophy classes. The scholarship is by application. Required application materials include: (1) a writing sample that demonstrates superior writing and critical thinking skills and (2) a letter of support from a philosophy faculty member that attests to the student’s critical thinking and writing skills, as well as the student’s academic and personal integrity. Students who have completed 75 hours must also submit a research proposal for a senior assignment project. Keene scholarships awarded for a student’s junior year may be renewed for the senior year.

Robert A. Gray Memorial Award in Philosophy
The Robert A. Gray Memorial Award is given annually to a student in the philosophy program. The award is for $200.
The Robert A. Gray Memorial Award is restricted to philosophy majors and is by nomination only. Students interested in being considered for the award must have a philosophy faculty member write a nominating letter, which the faculty member should submit to the Department Chair. The support letter should address the ways in which the student has displayed academic excellence in the student’s pursuit of a philosophy major.

John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship
The John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship is an annual award given to a student majoring in philosophy. The award is for $2000.
The John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship is by application. Students are eligible for the award if: (1) they are a declared major or minor in philosophy (2) have earned at least 60 credit hours (3) have achieved at minimum 2.75 GPA. Students interested in being considered for the award must complete as part of their application an essay of 1500-2500 words that addresses the relevance and role philosophy has to themselves personally or to the world at large.

Mary A. Maguire Dunnagan History/Philosophy Writing Contest Award
The Mary A. Maguire Dunnagan History/Philosophy Writing Contest is an award given to a student who has written an exceptional paper in either intellectual history or the history of philosophy. The award is for $500.
The Mary A. Maguire Dunnagan Award is restricted to graduate and undergraduate students in History and Philosophy, requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 in one of those majors, and is by nomination only. Students interested in being considered for the award should contact a faculty member to express their interest. Interested students will need to (1) identify the paper they wish to be considered for the award and (2) have a History or Philosophy faculty member write a nominating letter in support. Nominating faculty should submit to the Department Chair both the student paper and their nominating letter.

Ober Honors Award in Philosophy
The Ober Honors Award is awarded annually in recognition of a student’s performance in a philosophy class or classes. The award is for $200.
The Ober Honors Award is by nomination only. Any full-time student having attended a philosophy class for which they are registered is eligible for the award. Students interested in being considered for the award must have a philosophy professor write a nominating letter. Nominating faculty should submit their support letter for the nominated student to the Department Chair.

Religious Studies Scholarship
The Religious Studies Scholarship is an annual award given to a student who is a declared Religious Studies minor in recognition of a student's interest, participation, and contribution to the SIUE Religious Studies community. The award is for $500.

Environmental Philosophy Scholarship
The Environmental Philosophy Scholarship is awarded to a philosophy or environmental science student in recognition of a student's demonstrating outstanding aptitude and promise in their engagement with topics of, and related to environmental philosophy. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better to be eligible for the award. Students interested in being considered for the scholarship should have a philosophy faculty member write a nominating letter to be sent to the Philosophy Department Chair. The award is for $500.

Gertruke C. Drake Award for Excellence in Classical Languages
The Gertrude C. Drake Award is given to a SIUE student in recognition for accomplishments in the study of Latin or Greek. The award is for $100.
The Gertrude C. Drake Award is by nomination only. Students interested in be considered for the award must have a faculty member from the Department of English, the Department of Philosophy, or the Department of Foreign Languages submit a nominating letter to the Academic Works forum. The student needs to upload the nominating letter to the Academic Works forum. Nominating faculty should also submit a letter of support for the nominated student.
