Campus Recreation Inclusivity Statement
The Department of Campus Recreation at SIUE strives to respect, support, and provide equal opportunity and inclusion for all SIUE students and Student Fitness Center members regardless of race, gender, religious affiliation, age, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran status, language, national origin, ancestry, intellectual development, physical ability, or socio-economic status. Additionally, we work to reflect the values expressed in the SIUE Statement on Diversity and the Cougar Creed through our policies, attitudes and actions.
Policies addressing a few of the above stated populations are listed below. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accommodations for any demographic, please feel free to contact us at (618) 650-2348.
Inclusive Policies and Practices
SIUE Campus Recreation is an Institutional Member of NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation and subscribes to the best practices that they put forth, including those stated in their Statement for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
Gender Expression
NIRSA also has policies that specifically address gender identity. “NIRSA recognizes and celebrates the transgender student population among its tournament players and encourages students to participate in intramural sports and sport club divisions based on their expressed gender identity.” Source: http://nirsa.net/nirsa/wp-content/uploads/here.pdf. Therefore, SIUE Campus Recreation welcomes students and members to participate where they feel most comfortable.
SIUE Club Sports
Certain clubs may have limits on participation and/or membership due to competitive team size, national governing body rules, resource restrictions, etc. Read the full SIUE Club Sports Handbook.
SIUE Intramural Sports
To ensure the safety and enjoyment of IM Sports programs, events and/or leagues may be categorized by age, weight class, gender, or ability. Read the full SIUE Intramural Sports Handbook.
Locker Rooms
SIUE students and Student Fitness Center members have the ability to use the locker room that aligns with their personal gender identity and/or expression, regardless of which gender is listed in the SIUE records or on their birth certificate. To further promote an inclusive, accessible and comfortable environment, SIUE Campus Recreation sponsored the building of private, gender neutral/family facilities. These new private spaces include a restroom, a shower/restroom and a dressing room that can also serve as a maternity nursing room. Both restrooms include a baby changing station.
Spouse/Partner/Family Memberships
Campus Recreation policy states:
- Immediate family shall be defined as a spouse/domestic partner and/or dependent children (up to age 26) of the approved facility user only.
- Spouses must provide proof of marriage (copy of a marriage license or other documentation).
- Domestic partners must show proof of partnership.
- Civil union partners must provide proof of a civil union (copy of civil union license).
- A domestic partnership is an interpersonal relationship between two individuals who live together and share a common domestic life but are not married. Both same‐sex and opposite‐sex partners can be a civil union partner.
Accessibility
Our facility’s accessibility is ADA compliant, and we offer fitness equipment that is suitable for those with injuries or different abilities. Personal trainers and orientations are also available for those with special needs.
