As the Assessment and Triage Counselor, Shervonti conducts most of the department’s initial assessment appointments and uses a stepped-care model to make treatment decisions. She also facilitates walk-in crisis appointments where she assesses for imminent risk to determine appropriate next steps. Furthermore, Shervonti provides consultation appointments for students that need resources outside of Counseling Services.
Shervonti returned to the SIUE Counseling Services team during summer 2021. She completed her graduate practicum experience as the Psychological Assessment Intern in Counseling Services and graduated with her master’s degree from SIUE in 2020. She then moved out of the area to become an intake specialist at a private mental health facility in central Illinois. In that role, Shervonti conducted walk-in crisis appointments and facilitated psychiatric admission referrals from hospitals all throughout Illinois.
Shervonti has worked with individuals of all ages who were going through some of the toughest moments in their lives. She strives to ensure safety and to be sure each client feels heard. She focuses on identifying short-term goals and the necessary resources to achieve those goals. She then pairs the client with the appropriate counseling service to help.
In my role as Assessment and Triage Counselor:
“As the Assessment and Triage Counselor, I am the introduction to Counseling Services. The initial assessment is the first step students take when seeking services. Through the initial assessment, I am able to gather information and explain services offered to help students adjust during this transitional period. College can be difficult to navigate on your own and my goal is to provide a safe environment for those tough moments and help students get connected to appropriate resources on and off campus.”
