Frequently Asked Questions
When will Degree Works be available to campus?
Degree Works will be available to academic advisors through CougarNet in August 2018. It will become available to students in spring 2019.
Who will be able to use Degree Works?
After full implementation all students and academic advisors will be able to use Degree Works for program planning and evaluation towards graduation. Initially, Degree Works will be available to students with 2017-2018 catalog years and beyond. Students with catalog years prior to 2017-2018 will still utilize the degree evaluation in CougarNet. Faculty and selected staff will also have access for the purpose of supporting student progress throughout their academic career. Degree Works does not replace academic advisement.
When available, can I access Degree Works on any computer?
You can access Degree Works anywhere you can login to CougarNet.
Will Degree Works information be confidential?
Degree Works is accessed via your secure login through CougarNet. Remember that your advisor and selected faculty and staff will be able to view the information contained in Degree Works.
What is the current degree audit program used at SIUE?
Degree evaluation, also known as curriculum, advisement and program planning (CAPP), is the student information system (Banner) application that provides degree audits for students and advisors to check progress toward graduation. Program requirements that appear in the catalog are compared against the individual student’s record. CAPP is currently accessed through CougarNet.
How is Degree Works different from the previous evaluation?
Degree Works produces an easier to read degree audit and also has additional tools such as GPA calculators and the student educational planner (SEP) that aids students and advisors in program planning and course selection.
Is Degree Works the same as a transcript?
What is the "what if" audit?
The "what if" audit is a Degree Works feature that allows students to select a program they might be interested in pursuing to see how their completed and registered coursework would fulfill the requirements for that potential program.
What if the major or minor is listed incorrectly?
Degree Works displays the major/minor information that is declared on the student’s record. To change this information, the student must work with an academic advisor and formally change their declaration through the advisement office’s established procedure.
How current will student information be in Degree Works?
The information in Degree Works is refreshed each night. Any changes made today will be seen in Degree Works tomorrow. Academic advisors may also refresh student information when a record is updated if necessary.
Can students register for classes in Degree Works?
No. Degree Works is a snapshot of courses in progress, planned and in academic history. Course registration will still take place in CougarNet.
Are student grades visible in Degree Works?
Yes, once grades have been processed at the end of the semester grades are viewable in Degree Works following the nightly refresh after the final grading period for the University has ended (after grades are visible in CougarNet). Courses in progress are listed with an "IP" grade.
Is there a viewable list of all of the classes?
Who does a student contact if they have issues?
Students should always consult their academic advisor for any questions or review of their audit.
Why isn't a student's information up-to-date?
There could be several reasons:
- Degree Works may not have refreshed since a change was made (the information is refreshed nightly).
- There could be some paperwork that needs to be completed. For example, in the case of completed transfer courses, it is possible that the University has not received an official transcript or the coursework is pending departmental review. Check with your academic advisor if your transcript or audit does not reflect transfer work you have completed.
- A substitution or waiver for a course requirement may not have been processed yet. Check with your advisor to inquire about the status of the substitution or waiver.
- Final grades have not been processed for the end of the semester.
