Do you work closely with your graduate students? Do you wonder how you could more effectively support their success? Come join in the discussion of graduate student mentoring cases, scenarios, and dilemmas.
Faculty can submit their mentoring questions, cases and scenarios for discussion to Susan Morgan (smorgan@siue.edu) by Wednesday, February 15.
Prior to Wednesday, February 22, faculty are encouraged to complete the free, online professional development course developed by University of Minnesota called Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring: An Online Curriculum for the Professional Development of Research Mentors. The course takes about 90-120 minutes to complete and is applicable to all disciplines.
Course Objectives:
- Appreciate and communicate to mentees the importance of mentoring in their development as researchers.
- Articulate the roles and responsibilities of a mentor and a mentee.
- Engage in mentoring as a formally structured process, with clear goals, definable phases, and metrics to measure achievement.
- Apply general strategies to promote effective mentoring relationships.
- Identify and overcome challenges to effective mentoring.

- Click “Register” button in middle of page.
- Click red “Add to Cart” on right-half of page.
- Click red “Checkout” button in pop-up box.
- Click red “Checkout” button on top or bottom of page.
- Click red “Continue” button under “I’m new to the University.”
- Fill out the registration form provided. Click “Submit” button. (After submitting the registration form, you will receive an email from emadmin@umn.edu regarding your new account. You may keep this email for future reference.)
- Click red “Continue” button.
- Fill in your ID (email address used to register) and password you created. Click red “Sign In” button.
- Review information for your account profile. Only portions with a red asterisk are required. Initial in the spaces at the bottom of the page and click red “Continue Checkout” button.
- Complete questionnaire. Only portions with a red asterisk are required. Check the “Privacy Confirmation” box. Click “Continue Checkout.”
- On the “Receipt” page, click “Learner Portal” at the top left of the page. Then click “Learner Home.” You will see under “My Current Courses” the course “Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring.” Click the course title to begin the course.
