What is the Digital Community Engagement Pathway? Visit with the planning committee to learn about developments over the last year in the design of a project-based learning cohort for underserved students called the Digital Community Engagement Pathway. The Pathway uses community engagement, small research teams, digital methods, and an interdisciplinary approach to core curricula. During their first two years, students will meet in intensive research teams comprised of five students, a faculty mentor, and a community partner. These teams will focus on a seemingly unsolvable problem such as poverty’s manifestations across rural and urban environments. In products at the end of each year, research teams will apply a variety of digital methods, including data mining, mapping, storytelling, and cultural analytics. Leading Research Teams This workshop will discuss best practices for facilitating research teams, which are small collaborative groups of student researchers who, facilitated by a faculty member, design their own course of study and project outcomes to address an issue that interests them. Designing Content with African American Students in Mind African American student enrollment at SIUE has increased in notable ways over the last ten years, but what has this increase meant for course design? This presentation highlights several key findings concerning African American undergraduate educational experiences and raises the possibility of actively addressing a student population that is less white than it was in the past. Participants will discuss SIUE’s indifference and isolation problems at the University and identify useful course design strategies for acknowledging a growing African American student presence at SIUE. Mentoring Underserved Students Often, underserved students are unintentionally overlooked and excluded from important collegiate life experiences because educators do not recognize their unique needs. Many of these students do not have access to the proper guidance (through family who graduated college or resources in college preparatory high schools) to successfully navigate college. Digital Visualization and Communication Workshop In this two-hour workshop, Jessica DeSpain will cover several digital visualization and communication tools related to text mining, mapping, archiving, videography, and podcasting, and networking that teachers might use in their courses.
