Mapping Subtext in the Classroom: Teaching with Semiotic Squares
When: Monday, February 23, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Modality: In-Person.
Where: Lovejoy Library 2nd Floor, CFDI 2030.
Facilitator: Zachary Riebeling.
Description: One of the most pressing and publicized concerns of the contemporary moment in higher education surrounds the teaching and reading of fiction in the classroom and the capacity of students to make sense of strange and difficult texts. As such, techniques for critical interpretation of texts are essential for meaningful interdisciplinary and general education. This workshop explores one such technique that has been very effective in the John Martinson Honors Program: the Semiotic Square (also known as the Greimas Square), a means for mapping the linguistic, aesthetic, and political unconscious of texts that is both intellectually rigorous and engaging for students.
