Limited Submission: Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Programs
Eligibility
For both programs the following eligibility requirements apply:
- Full or part-time humanities faculty;
- Tenure or non-tenure track appointment;
- Early career faculty (received doctorate in last 12 years).
Nominees may propose to use grant funds in a manner that will best meet the needs of the project. Previously awarded funds have been used to:
- Support collaborators;
- Purchase required equipment and supplies;
- Cover necessary travel for the grantee, collaborators or participants; and
- Secure time, in the form of course releases or summer salary, if the project’s needs warrant it.
Award Description
Applicants should consider which program is most relevant based on the stage of development for the project.
- Award is up to $10,000 (up to 10 Seed Grants will be awarded nationally);
- Supports projects at earlier stages of development before nominee has been able to establish a specific track record of success for the proposed public-facing work;
- Seed Grants are NOT designed for projects starting entirely from scratch;
- Nominees must have fleshed out a compelling vision, including a clear sense of collaboration required and the ultimate scope and outcomes;
- Specific short-term steps required to advance the project must be articulated in the proposal;
- Resources required to complete the project must be identified;
- Recipients may use the grant to test projects on a smaller scale or deeply engage in planning with collaborators or the intended public.
Public Engagement Fellowship
- Award is $50,000 (up to 7 Fellowships will be awarded nationally)
- Project must be far enough into development/execution to present specific, compelling evidence that the project will successfully engage the intended public;
- Overall strategy and practical implementation plan will be deeply developed
- Relationships with key collaborators are already in place
- Connections with the intended public have been cultivated
- Nominee and collaborator may have tested the idea in a pilot or the project itself may be underway.
Timeline for the SIUE Internal Competition Submission
- Notice of Intent Deadline: Third Tuesday in March by 4:30 pm submitted through Limited Submission Application in Kuali Build
- SIUE Pre-Proposal Application Deadline: Second Tuesday in April.
- Notification of selection to submit full proposal to NSF: Fourth Wednesday in April.
Selection Criteria for the SIUE Internal Competition Submission
Should an internal Competition be required, you will receive a notification via email from Kuali Build to upload your Pre-Submission Materials (single pdf in order indicated) by 4:30 on the second Tuesday in April.
Required SIUE Pre-Proposal Materials
- Application Cover Sheet
- Project Summary/Narrative (max 3 - 5 pages)
- References
- Each PI or Co-PI must provide a 2-page C.V. with selected publications and activities that most relate to this project.
- Budget Justification (Limit 2 double spaced pages)
*These must be submitted in a single pdf in the order indicated on application form.

Internal submissions will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee of experts.
Timeline for Full Submission
- Proposal to be created in Kuali: First Tuesday in May.
- Proposal Routed in Kuali: First Tuesday in June.
- Full Application Deadline: Third Tuesday in June: Application submitted to the Whiting Foundation with the assistance of the SIUE Office of Research and Projects.
