Qualifications

  • Must be actively enrolled in a graduate program at SIUE (either Engineering or Humanities – Humanities is preferred for this position) 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interest in teaching with technology
  • Interest or experience in teaching information literacy
  • Able to work independently as well as on a team
  • Must be available during morning and afternoon hours during the summer
  • Must be prepared to begin work/training starting August 8th, 2025
  • Must have a reliable way into work
  • Must be flexible with scheduling

Position Description

 The Biomedical Library (BML) graduate assistant plays a crucial role in both the day-to-day operations of the Biomedical Library and in empowering students to develop deeper library researching skills. Working at the Biomedical Library at the School of Dental Medicine campus in Alton, Illinois, this position is responsible for answering general and subject-specific reference questions in-person and via email, phone, and online chat. The position is also responsible for staffing the combined information and circulation desk, helping patrons with printing, scanning, and lab computers, opening and closing and safety procedures, and other tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain building operations of the Alton Biomedical Library during scheduled hours (Mon-Fri, 7:30 am – 5:00 pm)
  • Provide frontline customer service at the library’s help desk, both in person and for remote users via phone, email, or live chat
  • Open and close the building, making sure library property and equipment is secure
  • Conduct reference interviews with students and assist them in developing their ability to research using library materials and resources 
  • Assist LIS librarians with research consultations, special projects, and other researching skills-based tasks
  • Assist in other LIS departments as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
