Welcome to SIUE! We are glad you chose SIUE as you place of employment and hope you enjoy your time here at the University.

This training presentation provides a brief overview of SIUE as well as the services and programs we offer our employees and students. Some slides will offer hyperlinks to visit additional sites within the SIUE website to give participants further information on the topic.

About Us

Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mississippi River’s rich bottom land and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of more than 13,000.

A Tradition of Excellent Leadership

More than sixty-five years after admitting its first students, SIUE remains a public university for the people of Southwestern Illinois. SIUE's leadership structure has several different areas of focus. Each unit, either academic or administrative, falls under the guidance of one of the members of the Chancellor’s Council leadership team:

SIUE Organization Chart

History

In 1957, SIU opened two residence centers in Alton and East St. Louis. In 1958, the Council began a highly-successful private fundraising campaign to purchase land for a new campus. By 1959 enrollment had increased to 3,800 greatly exceeding the temporary facilities and available services. A planning team investigated permanent sites in the Metro-East counties and selected a location near Edwardsville. Groundbreaking for SIU Edwardsville was held in 1963. In 1965, SIUE opened the Peck Classroom Building and Lovejoy Library in the midst of 2,660 acres of rolling land and woods.

Today, fulfilling the dreams of the Council, SIUE is a premier metropolitan university, offering a broad choice of degrees and programs ranging from liberal arts to professional studies and employing over 2,300 faculty and staff members. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in the arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, and nursing. Professional degrees are available in dental medicine and pharmacy.

SIU System

SIUE is part of the Southern Illinois University System. Chartered in 1869, Southern Illinois University, first known as Southern Illinois Normal University, opened its doors for instruction in Carbondale in 1874 in a one-building teacher training institution. In 1947, the name was changed to Southern Illinois University, reflecting the institution’s expanding academic mission.

The two institutions that constitute Southern Illinois University today - Southern Illinois University Carbondale, with a School of Medicine in Springfield and partnership in the University Center of Lake County, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, with a School of Dental Medicine in Alton and a Center in East St. Louis. Governed by a Board of Trustees, the SIU system operates with a total budget of approximately $867 million and employs more than 7,000 faculty, staff, and administrators who serve over 28,000 students.

What is Academic Affairs?

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs serves as the Chief Academic Officer of the University and is primarily responsible for promoting the academic and scholarly environment of the campus, while supporting its faculty, staff and students.

Working in collaboration with the academic deans, faculty, and staff as well as the Southern Illinois University President's Office, Board of Trustees and the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Provost is responsible for strategic academic program and budget planning, policy development and review, program assessment, faculty and student development.

Who is Academic Affairs?

Units supported by the Provost include SIUE’s seven schools and college, Lovejoy Library, the Graduate School, academic service units, and several teaching and research centers and programs.

Community Partnerships

SIUE partners with many area businesses and colleges to help bring additional education options for non-traditional students. 2 + 2 Programs with local community colleges, dual admissions, the School of Nursing partnerships with regional hospitals, and corporate relationships with companies to expand educational options for their employees are all examples of how SIUE works to help non-traditional students complete their degrees.

Advocating for Students

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs serves as the primary advocate for students and student concerns, provides services and activities which enhance students’ learning experiences, administers the Student Code of Conduct and adjudicates complaints filed under the Code, and assists students in the resolution of problems involving multiple University offices.

The division of Student Affairs is dedicated to supporting and challenging students to achieve their full potential through comprehensive co-curricular opportunities and access to services that enhance learning and achievement.

Emergency Management and Safety

Emergency Management and Safety at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) has a vital mission integral to protecting the continuity of University operations as well as the safety and security of students, faculty, staff and visitors. The emergency management function uses an all hazards approach that ensures the University is prepared for a wide range of disasters including such things as earthquakes, severe weather, hazardous material incidents, Homeland Security incidents, pandemic flu and other serious threats to the University and its community.

Emergency Management and Safety

State Universities Retirement System (SURS)

Newly hired full- and part-time employees at SIUE with an employment period of four months or more will participate in SURS in lieu of Social Security as long as they are in a pay status.

*Employee is required to contribute 8%
*Employer matching-percentage based on plan

*SURS offers three plans to choose from:

Traditional
Portable
Self-Managed

*Employees have six months to make a selection or they will be defaulted to Traditional plan

Insurance Enrollment

New employees will be sent an email from Benefits Department within 7-10 business days of start date. Benefits eligible employees have 30 calendar days from their hire date or eligibility date to make State plan elections including declining coverage.

The Benefits Department asks that employees check both work email and personal email as some items may be sent to your siue.edu email account.

Default Enrollment

If employees do not elect a plan within 30 calendar days, this will result in the following default enrollment for both full and part-time (50% or more) employees:

Ways to be Involved on Campus

Employee at SIUE can volunteer to help out at numerous campus events such as Move In Day, graduation ceremonies, first day activities and Textbook Service's check-out/return days.

The University also hosts several events for staff such as the Employee Service Awards, Holiday Reception and Employee Appreciation Day. These are fun events held to thank employees for their hard work at the University.

University wide events such as the Merchant Fair hosted in August and the Taste of SIUE in April are open to all employees to participate and attend.

Inclusive Excellence at SIUE

Inclusive Excellence is an active process through which colleges and universities intentionally integrate diversity, inclusion and equity into their educational quality efforts, missions and infrastructure. The core principles of inclusive excellence are diversity, inclusion, equity and equity mindedness.

In the Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan (2018-2025), SIUE identified Inclusive Excellence as the framework and change model the University would adopt to develop and implement a set of systemic actions to facilitate the upbuilding of an equity-minded and centered campus culture.

Campus Safety

SIUE Police Service

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Police Department is a community-oriented law enforcement agency comprising 42 sworn police officers and 9 civilian employees. SIUE police officers are certified law enforcement officers with full investigatory and arrest authority granted by Illinois law. The SIUE Police Department is open and accessible to the University community 24 hours a day, and has its own Telecommunication Unit, which dispatches police officers to calls for service.

Community Oriented Policing

SIUE Police Services fosters a partnership with the University community to set a foundation for the community oriented policing philosophy developed by the department. Community oriented policing philosophy means being a highly visible and approachable police force. Police Services staff host various presentations and programs throughout the year to educate the University community, including faculty, staff, and students, on crime prevention methods and techniques and encourage them to accept appropriate responsibility for their safety and security on campus.

Emergency Services

Emergency Campus Telephones: SIUE has emergency telephones located in in a variety of locations at all three campuses, which will allow for easy communications to the SIUE Police Department.

Rave Guardian: SIUE also offers the Rave Guardian app for its students, faculty and staff. This app provides instant communication with friends, family, campus safety and even 9-1-1.

e-Lert

SIUE's e-Lert is a text messaging service that will be used to quickly notify faculty, staff and student cell phones when an urgent situation, such as a bomb threat or hostile intruder, occurs or when the University closes due to inclement weather. There is no cost to register for the alerts; however, standard rates may apply if your cell phone plan does not include text messaging.

If you are a student, faculty, or staff member, you can register by clicking the "Sign Up Now" link and follow steps to enter your active e-id, password, and cell phone number. Each time you are notified to change your e-id password, you will also be given an opportunity to enroll, update your cell phone number if it has changed, or cancel your registration with the system.
