Frequently Asked Questions - Winter Session
Is online learning right for me?
Review planning and preparation and take the online readiness survey to determine if you're ready for an online class.
Can I enroll in more than one winter session course?
Students may not enroll in more than three credit hours unless the courses are corequisites. Winter session courses are rigorous, and the accelerated format means classes are delivered in a compressed three-week format. Students enrolling in more than one winter session course will be administratively dropped from any course exceeding the limit.
Can I obtain a copy of the course syllabus?
A course syllabus is located within most course descriptions. Click the down arrow next to the course title to find the syllabus link. If a syllabus is not listed, please contact wintersession@siue.edu for a copy.
How do I apply as a visiting student?
Students who are not seeking a degree from SIUE can take winter session courses by applying as a visiting student. Please review the visiting student content for additional information. Visiting students must be accepted by December 1 to be eligible to enroll in a winter session course.
When can I register for winter session?
Review the spring academic calendar for registration dates. Winter session registration is open through December 15 in CougarNet. Students are not permitted to enroll in winter session classes after December 15.
Is winter session a different semester? How do I register for a winter session course?
Winter session is considered part of the spring semester at SIUE. Look for "WS" in the course/section number for winter session courses when searching for available classes in CougarNet.
How much does a winter session course cost?
Tuition and fees for an undergraduate, three-hour course are $1,255.80 for incoming and visiting students. Charges for any winter session course will post as part of the spring semester bill. Billing deadlines are available at the Office of the Bursar. Winter session courses count toward your financial aid for the spring semester. Visiting students are not eligible for financial aid.
Winter Session Course Eligibility
You should not enroll in a winter session course if you:
- Are not in good academic standing
- Were not eligible to enroll in English 101 and entry-level math courses by the beginning of the academic year prior to enrolling in winter session
- Are a first-time, full-time student who will start at SIUE in the spring semester
The Registrar will administratively drop students from winter session courses who meet these criteria.
Please note: If you register for a winter session course and are unable to complete the course successfully, you may need to adjust your spring course schedule. Please meet with your advisor to review your spring schedule.
Student Support
Online tutoring for select courses is available through the Tutoring Resource Center. If tutoring is available for your course, information on assigned tutors, available dates/times and method of contact will be included in your course syllabus or course help module.
If you need to request academic accommodations for winter session, please submit the online application, as well as documentation for review and determination of accommodations no later than December 18 at noon.
Visit the Plan for Success and Student Support webpages for additional information about online orientation, course materials and student resources.
