SIUE School of Pharmacy
Resident Teaching Certificate Program
Preparing the Next Generation of Pharmacy Educators
The SIUE School of Pharmacy’s Resident Teaching Certificate Program equips pharmacy residents with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed as educators in both academic and clinical settings. Each year, 30–40 residents and fellows from more than 15 residency and fellowship programs participate, making it one of the region’s most collaborative and impactful teaching development programs.
Program Overview
The Resident Teaching Certificate Program introduces residents to foundational theories of adult learning, effective teaching strategies, and methods of learner assessment. Participants engage in interactive seminars, mentored teaching experiences, and guided reflections designed to build competence and confidence in teaching.
Through these experiences, residents strengthen their ability to deliver high-quality education in both the clinical and/or academic settings, facilitate small-group discussions, create engaging case studies, and provide constructive feedback as clinical preceptors.
Program Goals
By completing the program, residents will be able to:
- Apply core concepts of adult learning and instructional theory.
- Design and deliver formal didactic lectures and professional presentations.
- Facilitate small-group and case-based learning activities.
- Create clear learning objectives and effective assessment tools.
- Conduct and receive peer evaluations of teaching.
- Enhance skills in clinical precepting and managing challenging learner situations.
Program Structure
The certificate program spans one year (typically running from July through May) and blends live, virtual, and practice-based activities:
- Live in person modules (held at SIUE School of Pharmacy each July)
- Live virtual modules (delivered throughout the year with flexible scheduling)
- Assignments and reflections paired with program and module goals
- Practice-based teaching requirements, including:
- Formal didactic lecture or CE presentation
- Small-group or case-based learning activity

- Peer teaching evaluations
All assignments and resources are managed through a learning management platform.
