Preferred Name
Students who identify with a name other than their legal name can elect to add an additional name or preferred name to their record. In lieu of the legal name, the preferred name will appear on class lists, advising information, CougarNet, Blackboard, Starfish, Degree Works, and on your Cougar ID card.
Legal names will still appear on external reports and documents including, but not limited to, paychecks, accounts payable checks, student billing, financial aid forms, tax forms (e.g. 1098-T), and other documents required by law. Students may not designate a preferred last name.
To add a Preferred Name to your record, please submit the Name Change Request Form to the Service Center.

To track our progress as we make changes to ancillary systems to display individual's pronouns or gender identification, please visit Diversity & Inclusion System Resources of the Registrar's Office.
Why This Matters:
- Respect and Inclusion: Using the correct pronouns for someone acknowledges their identity and shows respect for who they are. It helps create an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and included.
- Affirming Identity: For many people, especially those who are transgender, non-binary, or gender non-conforming, being addressed with the correct pronouns is a crucial part of affirming their gender identity. It validates their sense of self and can significantly impact their mental and emotional well-being.
- Promoting Diversity: Normalizing the sharing and use of pronouns fosters a culture of belonging and promotes diversity. It challenges gender assumptions and encourages people to think beyond binary notions of gender, supporting a broader understanding of gender diversity.
Privacy & Confidentiality:
- Allows your preferred pronouns to be shared within CougarNet and potentially other ancillary systems (e.g. Blackboard, Starfish, Degree Works, etc.) in order for your advisor, staff, and faculty to support a respectful learning environment.
- In the coming weeks and months, ITS will continue to work on integrating preferred pronouns to be utilized in ancillary systems outside of CougarNet.
- Your pronouns and gender identification are not part of directory information and will not be disclosed publicly or to other students. For more information on Directory Information and SIUE commitment to your data confidentiality, visit FERPA & Right to Privacy.
- Only authorized SIUE employees, such as academic advisors, faculty and campus staff, will have access to your pronouns and gender identity information.
