Determine Need
When referring a student of concern, determine if they are in need of immediate assistance.
Yes = A student’s conduct is clearly reckless, disorderly, dangerous or threatening and suggests immediate harm to self or others in the community. What to do:

- Report your concerns by filling out a Student of Concern Form
I’m not sure = A student is showing clear signs of distress. You may feel uneasy or concerned after an interaction with a student but aren’t sure what to do or how to help. What to do:

No = I’m not concerned for the student’s immediate safety, but they are having significant academic and/or personal issues and could use support. What to do:

Determine Level of Support
- Distressed = Behavior that causes one to feel concerned, upset, or worried about a student.
- Disruptive = Behavior that interferes with or interrupts the education process or the normal business functions of the university.
- Threatening = Behavior that creates a reasonable fear for the student’s safety, or the safety of others.
Response Team
Southern Illinois University is committed to the emotional and physical well-being of all students, as well as their academic success. The Student Care referral program, managed by the Student Care and Advocacy Network (SCAN), offers an easy-to-use tool to share nonemergency-related concerns about student behaviors and potential barriers to success.
The Student Care and Advocacy Network (SCAN) is comprised of staff members from the following offices: Dean of Students, Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS), Equal Opportunity, Access and Title IX (EOA), Academic Affairs, and Counseling Service. These team members are all trained to lead the coordination of this program.
The overall goal of the team is to provide a multi-faceted approach to coordinate interventions that support students both in their academic and co-curricular pursuits. The team is also charged with identifying campus trends and eliminating barriers to student success.
While referrals from this form are reviewed by a variety of campus partners working to assist students, it is NOT designed for emergency response situations. If this is an emergency or someone is in immediate danger, please contact SIUPD at (618) 650-3324 or 911.
Questions regarding the Care Team should be directed to the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@siue.edu or 618-650-2020.
