Most people know about Madam C.J. Walker's success selling hair care products for Black women in the early 1900s. Before she started her own business, though, she worked for Annie Turnbo Malone. Malone had built a huge business creating hair care and cosmetic products for Black women, and founded Poro College in St. Louis, Missouri. A major center for education, employment and culture in the Ville neighborhood during segregation.
The 90-minute film examines Malone’s rise as one of the nation’s first Black female millionaires, drawing on interviews with people who knew her and detailing her business and philanthropic work.
Hosted by the SIUE Black Faculty & Staff Association and 88.7 WSIE "The Sound" this event is FREE and open to the public, with limited seating.
