The Department of Art and Design offers current students support for their education through scholarships and various work or internship opportunities. Please visit Academic Works and search Art and Design to view scholarships and other awards as they become available.
Art Scholarship
The Department of Art and Design has been granted (sponsored by the Office of the Provost) 10 one-semester Art and Design scholarships to award to a combination of incoming students, declared freshmen and current art majors for the upcoming academic year. This scholarship is based on outstanding achievement and grade point average.
To qualify for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a declared Art major (Art History, Art Studio, Art Education)
- Have a 3.0-4.0 GPA overall
- Have a 3.0-4.0 GPA in your major classes (Art History, Art Studio, Art Education)
To apply for this scholarship, you must use Academic Works for the application process.
Once in Academic Works, search for Art and Design Scholarship.
- Resume (no more than three pages, in .docx or .pdf format)
- 500-word essay (in .docx or .pdf format; see Academic Works for the essay prompt)
- Unofficial transcript (scanned into .pdf format)
- Images: 8-10 digital images in a Microsoft PowerPoint file and accompanied by an image list in .docx or .pdf format (Art Studio and Art Education majors only)
- Art History paper: graded, with course number and title, and instructor’s name in .docx or .pdf format (Art History majors only)
- For current art majors, all submitted work must have been completed at Southern Illinois University

Internships
Saint Louis Art Museum
Every summer, the Curatorial Department offers unpaid, competitive eight-week curatorial internships from early June through early August.
Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM)
Each semester, CAM offers hands-on internships for up to 15 university students and professionals seeking career development. As St. Louis’ premier museum dedicated to contemporary art, CAM offers a variety of unique opportunities for prospective interns in the following areas: Curatorial, Learning and Engagement, Development, Media, PR/Marketing, Registrar and Visitor Services.
The Kranzberg Arts Foundation offers internship programs within the Marketing and Communications Visual Arts and Performing Arts curriculums. Located in the Grand Center Arts District, the heart of St. Louis’ visual and performing arts community, the Kranzberg Arts Foundation operates venues and galleries; conceives, markets, and implements arts programming; and provides necessary infrastructure for the arts to thrive in the St. Louis region.
International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum
The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum honors those who have made great contributions to the field of photography and preserves historic photographs and cameras to share with the world.
Alive Magazine
Alive Magazine is known for accepting applications from top students for graphic design and photography internship programs. Internships are typically offered fro three-month terms and serve as an opportunity for students to work on published projects, shoot events and editorial content. Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
Enthusiastic volunteers are vital to Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; they complement, support and expand the Museum's successful, wide-ranging programs and events. Reciprocally, the Museum strives to provide people of all ages and backgrounds with an interesting and rewarding learning experience. Missouri Botanical Gardens
The Missouri Botanical Gardens offers unpaid internships designed for students to obtain academic credit or credentials to fulfill requirements of an apprenticeship or to experience professional development, perhaps in an area new to their career. Unpaid interns receive free admission to the Gardens, as well as discounts at its retail shops and Sassafras Cafe during the internship period.
