Who We Are
The Community-Engaged Scholarship Workgroup (CESW) is a collaborative project initiated by Dr. Aminata Cairo (Department of Anthropology) and Dr. James Hanlon (IUR and Department of Geography). It includes SIUE faculty and staff who are committed to advancing scholarship that involves and serves the communities in which we do our research. There are many of us on campus who are interested and/or involved in such scholarship. As rewarding as community-engaged work is, it also brings challenges, such as trying to translate our work in the academic arena or overcoming the tradional "research/researched" divide. The CESW has been formed to establish an organized network of interested participants for discussion, sharing ideas and resources, and collaboration on projects and grants. Plans for the workgroup include regular meetings and community dialogues, brown-bag events, workshops, and a website that highlights faculty projects and expertise, resources, and opportunities for funding and professional development.
Contact Aminata or James, and we will make sure you are up to date on workgroup meetings, events, and other activities. Share with us your knowledge, your experience, and your ideas. Whether you have been doing community-engaged scholarship for years or you are interested in taking your work in this direction, we want to hear from you. Spread the word to your colleagues, students, and friends in the community who may be interested in joining us. We look forward to hearing from you.
