Theater and Dance at SIUE
The Department of Theater and Dance provides a wide variety of academic courses and practical experience for approximately 85 majors and 50 minors in four areas of specialization: Performance, Dance, Design and Technical Theater, and Theater Education.
The department produces four Main Stage theater productions and one dance concert each academic year in the main theater in Dunham Hall and The Metcalf Theater, a black box with flexible seating for 150. We also offer a variety of productions by the Student Experimental Theater Organization, Black Theater Workshop, a Student Dance Concert and an Evening of One-Act Plays. The Cougar Theater Company and University Dance Company are comprised of student majors who tour theater and dance to area schools, festivals and conferences. During the summer, we produce a semi-professional season of musicals and classic plays, and every September we host SIUE Xfest, a four-day festival of alternative theater and dance productions and master classes presented by invited professional companies from around the nation.
“The job world is constantly changing, and you have to be prepared for that. SIUE Theater and Dance taught me to have a diverse skill set so that I could take on any task, any job, any challenge, with a creative solution. The teachers and staff helped me to gain the knowledge, understanding, and outside-the-box thinking that I have needed to succeed.”
- Scott Rocca, BS ’11 - Founder, Griffin 3D Printing
Our Department also offers two exciting study abroad opportunities. The London Theater Study Abroad course is offered every other year in the summer. In addition we have begun a study program in Suriname, South America in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology.
