Co-op and Internship Online Orientation - Read in Entirety
Co-op and Internship
What is the Co-op and Internship Program?
- Managed by the Career Development Center, students within all majors are afforded opportunities to connect with employers to participate in major-related work experiences whereby they may experience the connection of the classroom to their intended career.
- Cooperative Education (Co-ops) and Internships provide mutually beneficial relationships among an organization, an educational institution, and a student. In this relationship, students combine academic study with periods of career-related, preferably paid, major-related work experience, under the supervision of the employer.
- Experiences correspond to the academic calendar and may therefore occur in the Summer, Fall, or Spring terms.
- Co-op and Internship experiences through the Career Development Center do not receive course credit (i.e., you do not pay student fees or tuition for this experience), but it does offer provisions for official recognition on your academic transcript.
- Students reflect upon their career-readiness competencies to further identify how to improve upon those employer-expected skillsets.
- Paperwork is due at the beginning and end of each academic term. Please review deadlines and forms for more details.
Co-op vs Internship

- There are two types of Co-op
- Alternating - Students work full-time every other semester, alternating between full-time work assignments and full-time enrollment in school
- Parallel - Students work part-time year round while attending school full-time
- Internships
- May be unpaid, learning opportunities are major-related but may not be as immersive, and experiences may last for a shorter duration.
- Although not all internships are paid, the Career Development Center is among others who advocate that all internships should be paid.
