Financial Aid
Introduction
The SIUE Office of Student Financial Aid is committed to assisting qualified students in obtaining appropriate financial aid resources. Eligible dental students have access to low-interest federal and university loan programs. Scholarship programs also exist for qualified students.
Most students receive financial aid, particularly from federal loan programs. Beyond that, alternative loans are available.
The Office of Student Financial Aid is sensitive to student needs and provides individual attention through the application, packaging and disbursement process. Students receive specific and detailed information on financial assistance prior to Fall registration. All student borrowers receive entrance and exit counseling. Debt counseling is an on-going service, provided to enable each student to make educated decisions related to current and future financial planning. Types of Financial Aid
The SIU School of Dental Medicine offers eligible students financial aid in the forms of loans and scholarships. The kind of aid received can be categorized into two different types: gift aid and self-help aid. Self-help aid most often comes in the form of loans and it must be repaid. Gift aid normally comes in the form of scholarships and usually does not have to be repaid.
Loans are available to SIUE students through federal, state and institutional programs to assist with educational costs.
- First-time borrowers need to complete Entrance Counseling and submit an electronic Master Promissory Note (MPN).
- Students may borrow up to $40,500 in Direct Unsubsidized Loans. Grad PLUS or HPL Loans would then be offered based on eligibility of funding.
Scholarships are one form of financial aid given to students to help and pay for their education, and are offered by governments, colleges and private, outside sources. Scholarships are generally a form of a gift and do not have to be repaid; they can be based upon financial need, merit, or both.
How To Apply for Financial Aid
- Go to fafsa.ed.gov to obtain an FSA ID.
- Use your FSA ID as your identifier and digital signature when you complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
- Complete your FAFSA online using entries from your / your parents' completed tax returns. The SIU School of Dental Medicine student financial aid code is E00606.

To qualify for most financial aid at the SIU School of Dental Medicine, students:
- Must have a Social Security number.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
- Must be registered for selective service, if appropriate.
- Must be admitted as a degree-seeking student.
- Must be enrolled at least half-time each term.
- Must maintain satisfactory academic progress.
- Cannot be in default on other student loans or owe a grant refund.
Complete FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1.

- Direct Loan Servicing: To access your Federal Direct Loan information, deferments, forbearance, and consolidation information.
- National Student Loan Data System: To access your student loan information. Provides the amount of Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and Perkins loan money that a student has borrowed throughout their academic career.
- StudentLoans.gov: To complete a Grad PLUS Application and a Master Promissory Note. If you are a first time Grad PLUS borrower, you must first complete the entrance counseling.
