Graduate Orthodontics at SIU School of Dental Medicine
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is a specialty area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing or mature dentofacial structures. This includes conditions that require the movement of teeth and/or the correction of malposition and malformations of their related structures. The adjustment of the relationships between and among teeth as well as facial bones is accomplished by the application of forces and/or the stimulation and redirection of functional forces within the craniofacial complex. An orthodontist is responsible for:
- Diagnosis, prevention, interception, and treatment of all forms of malocclusion of the teeth and associated alterations of their surrounding structures
- Design, application, and control of functional and corrective appliances
- Guidance of the dentition and its supporting structures to attain and maintain optimal occlusal relations and physiologic and esthetic harmony among facial and cranial structures.
The graduate program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) aspires to be one of the top orthodontic training programs in the world, while actively engaging our residents in important clinical and translational research. The Section of Orthodontics at SIU SDM is responsible for all aspects of orthodontic education and research at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education levels. A CODA-accredited postdoctoral program is available to qualified applicants who wish to specialize in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
