Mentorship
Each postdoctoral fellow is assigned a mentor within their department. Mentoring pairs will meet six scheduled times per year (at the start, middle, and end of each semester). Activities for these meeting are outlined as follows:
Fall Start
Detail expectations of postdoctoral fellows within the department; establish how progress toward retention will be evaluated; outline a plan for advancement to a tenure-track role
Fall Middle
Creating teaching, scholarship, and service goals.
Fall End
Check in about the first semester at SIUE as a postdoctoral fellow.
Spring Start
Discuss any concerns; review progress towards advancement; professional goals
Spring Middle
Discuss any concerns; review progress towards advancement; professional goals
Spring End
Check in about the first academic at SIUE as a postdoctoral fellow.
We encourage mentoring pairs to establish an agreement of a meeting schedule as outlined above and additional expectations they have of one another to ensure a healthy mentorship pairing. Mentors should also provide postdocs with written guidance at the end of each semester. While many of the meetings may occur within the department, either in-person or virtually, we encourage pairings to consider meeting for lunch or dinner for one of the meetings each semester sponsored by the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program.

Postdocs and mentors will complete an end of semester evaluation to garner feedback on the program. Feedback will be used for continuous improvement.
