What Is FAFSA and Why Is It Important for Seniors?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application used by colleges, universities, trade schools, and career training programs to determine a student's eligibility for financial aid. By completing the FAFSA, seniors may qualify for federal grants, state grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities, and student loans that can help make postsecondary education more affordable. Completing the FAFSA is often the first and most important step in securing financial assistance for college or career training after high school. [isbe.net], [wwwprod.isac.org]
Under Illinois law, all public high school seniors are required to complete the FAFSA, the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid (if eligible), or submit a Financial Aid Application Nonparticipation (Opt-Out) Form as a graduation requirement. This requirement ensures that every student has the opportunity to explore available financial resources for their future educational goals.
We encourage all seniors and their families to complete the FAFSA as early as possible to maximize access to available financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Assistance is available through our FAFSA Night event, where families can receive support with completing the application and learn more about funding options for higher education
