Founders Hall Renovation - 03/01/19
Posted March 1, 2019
Facilities Management (FM) continues to make significant progress constructing all four seismic towers at Founders Hall (photos 1 and 2 show the southwest and northeast towers respectively). Additionally, new decking, new roof slab and the extension of the penthouse roof has allowed the removal of the roof tent. Tower roof decking and concrete pour will follow completion of the towers. We also continue to make progress installing the new energy efficient windows (photo 3) and with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work (photos 4 and 5) throughout the 2nd and 3rd floors.
FM and Emergency Management and Safety have continued to monitor air quality in and around Founders Hall. CO2, Oxygen, Carbon Monoxide, Toxic and Lower Explosive Limits (LEL's) have all remained at safe levels. Particulate matter tests, performed on January 8, 2019 in limited areas due to access during construction, indicated low levels on the lower level of Founders Hall, and on the lower level of Alumni Hall (all areas testing below 3,000 ppm). Particulate matter testing preformed on February 27, 2019 indicated low levels in all occupied areas of Founders Hall, ranging from 1,040 to 5,410 ppm. In contrast, outdoor particulate matter was 18,300 ppm and a reading from the stairwell near FH 0205 (in the construction area and not accessible to students, faculty, or staff) was 14,000 ppm, showing the contrast in air quality between occupied areas and construction/outdoor areas.
With the replacement of the roof deck, ongoing window replacement, as well as the addition of five temporary heating units located in restrooms, building temperature regulation has been greatly improved and will continue to do so with tower completions and rising outdoor temperatures. Cooling systems are tracking to be fully in place prior to the cooling season.
