School of Dental Medicine (SDM) Advanced Care Clinic
In February of 2020 SIU SDM broke ground on the new 17,390 square foot, $8.5 million Advanced Care Clinic. Within this new facility are 16 clinical chairs and two dental surgery suites with a common area where students can gather to collaborate.

Facilities Management is happy to announce the Founders Hall renovation continues on track for completion. We will working through the summer and eagerly anticipate all floors of Founders Hall to be open for academia for the fall 2020 semester.

As the fall semester quickly approaches, Facilities Management (FM) is hard at work with several construction projects across campus including the Founders Hall renovation, parking lot construction (Lots A, 10 and Korte Stadium), water valve replacements, sidewalks replacements, and the Lovejoy Library skylight. Phase I of the move back into Founders Hall has begun. On June 24, Facilities Management (FM) began moving office furniture and equipment back into some Founders Hall offices. We will begin the occupants move in for these offices on July 8. On July 15, FM will begin moving office furniture and equipment into another group of offices, followed with the occupants move in on July 29.

The southwest tower has been constructed to its full height and concrete is currently being poured for floor installations within the tower. Facilities Management (FM) continues to make significant progress constructing all four seismic towers at Founders Hall (photos 1 and 2 show the southwest and northeast towers respectively). In anticipation of the current unusual and extreme weather, Facilities Management completed an inspection of Founders Hall earlier this week to identify potential heating issues. Founders Hall Renovation - 12/21/18

Over the semester break, we will complete electrical and mechanical work on all levels of Founders Hall, including currently occupied areas. While this work will result in dust, construction debris, and noise throughout the building, it must be done at some point and we are working during the break to minimize disruption of daily university operations. Facilities Management (FM) has received new particulate matter data from tests performed by Emergency Management and Safety on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Results indicate that all areas were below our testing threshold of 10,000 parts per million (ppm), with the exception of one location in the southwest corner of the building that was slightly above at 10,050 ppm.

Over the next 30 days, now that both west tower pier caps are in-place, the contractor will continue to construct the walls for both of the west towers. Penthouse demolition is ongoing and the contractor will begin to remove parts of the roof in late December. During the next 30 days, we will pour the west towers’ pier caps and start building tower walls. Currently, the penthouse mechanical, electrical and plumbing demolition is nearly complete. Final drilling and emplacement of support piers concludes today with completion of the northeast tower piers. Because this process has been muddy, we have asked the contractor to keep the sidewalks and roadways clean.

Founder’s Hall construction progress continues with several milestones achieved since last week.
Most significantly, Silica testing is complete and the results are in; no Silica levels were detected (Silica Quartz, Cristobalite or Tridymite). The results were completed by SGS Galson, Syracuse, New York, a leading lab for Silica analysis.

The renovation is moving along and great progress has been made both outside and inside the building. First and foremost, while the contractor is completing steps necessary to isolate the bottom two floors for heating this winter, the sudden drop in temperatures this week have resulted in lower temperatures in the building than what we would like. Construction of the 2nd floor atrium barriers is complete and scaffolding has been removed. The installation of the drilled pier foundations for the seismic towers will start with mobilization of drilling equipment on Monday, October 8, and drilling anticipated starting on Tuesday, October 9. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe working environment, Facilities Management, in partnership with Emergency Management and Safety and Farmer Environmental Services, LLC, has conducted air quality tests for Founders Hall.
