Summer Construction - 08/08/19
Posted September 16, 2019
With the fall semester less than two weeks away, Facilities Management (FM) is continuing to work hard to complete summer projects. A short update is provided below, but first I want to take a brief moment to recognize you, the SIUE community, for the flexibility we have been afforded to provide the best physical learning environment to all three campuses. Your support and understanding has been crucial as we have worked through a variety of construction and scheduling issues, compounded by multiple projects reaching culmination points at the same time. With your support, we have been able to keep these projects moving, while continuing to field our normal day to day maintenance and smaller repair projects.
Second, with the recent network challenges, FM lost the ability to utilize the online program for submitting work order requests. While this could be restored with some effort, FM was already in the process of moving our project management software to a new online server. Rather than try to recreate the old system, we have elected to continue with the new system implementation, which includes a built in, online WO system. This system is still 60 days from being implemented. In the meantime, please call our help desk directly or fax/email your request. Next week we should have a new online form to use temporarily. We are excited at the capabilities of the new system to help us track and improve serving you, the SIUE community.
Founders Hall
The move back to recently renovated areas of Founders Hall, second and third floors, continues as swing space users in Science East and the VC switch. Classrooms are being moved. This move required moving Phase I swing space users out to their renovated spaces in Founder’s Hall, reconfiguring the swing space for the new users, and moving the new users into the space. The moves also entail working through issues both in the swing spaces and in Founder’s Hall to ensure the final spaces meet all requirements.
The outside spaces of Founders are much closer to completion, with three of the four towers’ masonry complete and the fourth tower underway.
Parking Lots
Parking Services and FM have worked hard over the summer to improve Lot 10, Lot A, and Korte Stadium. These improvements are designed to improve safety, traffic flow, parking accessibility (including ADA parking), lighting, and increased parking capacity.
Phase Two of the Lot A project is well underway. The subbase has been prepared, and paving of this area is expected to start tomorrow, August 9th. Phase II will also include finishing the sidewalks between the VC and both Founders/Alumni and the Library/Science East. The entrance drive will receive its final asphalt layers and paver bricks.
The Korte Stadium lot project is nearly complete, with paving expected to be complete today. Striping, grading and seeding will soon follow.
Walkways
This project replaces old asphalt walkway surfaces (many which were in poor condition) with concrete and improves ADA access with more user-friendly slopes. The last section to be poured this year is between Science East and the Library, which is now under construction. This section included a realignment of the previous sidewalk to align better with the Parking Lot A improvements. All other areas are complete pending sealing.
Water Vales
This project, which has resulted in many of the planned water outages across campus, is nearly complete for this construction season. State funding is being provided to complete all future phases in one project, including water valves and lines at the Alton Campus.
Lovejoy Library Skylight
Skylight panels have arrived and are being craned to the top of the Library. Framing and roofing has been completed. This project is on schedule to be completed within the next two weeks.
Additional Projects
In addition to the projects above, FM also completed or have almost completed a number of other projects around the campuses this summer including but not limited to:
· ESL- Rooftop Units (RTUs) for air conditioning;
· Early Childhood Development Center – Multiple improvements including a tricycle path and improved fencing;
