What is the purpose of a class observation?
The purpose of a class observation is to provide faculty with a valuable exchange of ideas as well as the opportunity to develop and grow as a teacher. An effective class observation can improve the effectiveness and quality of teaching as well as students' learning experiences.
What would you like to learn from having your class observed?
The key to a successful observation is mutual trust and respect between an Instructor and a Peer Consultant. The observing Peer Consultant will not impose any particular goals on you. Rather, you decide what you would like the focus of the observation to be. For example, an instructor may want to know whether the delivery of lecture content was clear or whether a particular group activity promoted student involvement in the subject. While faculty may have a specific purpose associated with class observation, it is also possible to request a general Class Observation. Additionally, a Peer Consultant can assist an instructor in deciding on goals for the Class Observation.
What happens after you request a Class Observation?
After you’ve requested a Class Observation a Peer Consultant will contact you. Typically the instructor and Peer Consultant arrange a time to meet so that the two can discuss the Instructor’s goals for the Class Observation. After the Class Observation has occurred the Peer Consultant will share a summary of their feedback with the Instructor. This can be done in writing, in person, or both.
