Student Awards and Scholarships
Through the SIUE scholarship management system, all students can browse and apply for more than 450 scholarships available in the various schools, departments and units at SIUE. This system also offers information on various external or outside scholarships available.

To begin a scholarship application, follow these steps:
- Login with your e-ID and password. You must have already been accepted to SIUE and received your e-ID and password.
- Fill out the general scholarship application. The system will search for scholarships and awards you may be eligible for. For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant pool and others may require you to answer additional questions.
- Continue to check the system regularly as new scholarships become available at different times, also be sure to browse our external scholarship list that provides information and direct links to outside scholarship websites.
The Friends of Lovejoy Library offer the following awards which can be found in the SIUE scholarship management system by searching using keywords or setting the filter to Library and Information Services.
Friends of Lovejoy Library Honors Award ($500)
The Honors Award is given for scholarship and is based on GPA, during enrollment at SIUE. Only undergraduate students are eligible for this award. You will need a written recommendation from your supervisor to apply.
Carol Ammon Friends of Lovejoy Library Student Development Award ($500)
The Student Development Award is given to a student who, on the basis of evaluation by supervisor and written letter, has shown a progressive development of job skills and work performance while maintaining superior grades. Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible. You will need a written recommendation from your supervisor and a personal letter addressing the influence of your work experience at the library to apply.
Graduate Library School Award ($500)
The Friends of Lovejoy Library provide an award to an SIUE student or SIUE alumnus who is planning to attend a graduate library science program after graduation. The awardee must either be an SIUE graduate or assured of graduation no later than the end of summer session the year the award is given. The awardee must be accepted for admission in the fall semester following graduation to a master's program in library science that is accredited by the American Library Association. Applicants must submit a letter of interest relating to their future plans in librarianship, a transcript and a letter of acceptance from an ALA-accredited library program.
Ina Peabody Sledge Award
Ina Peabody Sledge, a native of East St. Louis, Illinois, served with distinction as education librarian at Lovejoy Library from 1983 until her death in February 1998. During her 30 years of service to SIUE, she worked in a number of positions, including head of the East St. Louis Center Library. Ina Sledge's caring, giving attitude motivated and encouraged students to pursue their educational goals. She recognized and valued strong character and moral fortitude.
The Ina Peabody Sledge Award is given in the spring. There is a $500 stipend with the Sledge Award. SIUE undergraduate students in good standing, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, are eligible to apply for the award. Preference is given to residents of Alorton, Brooklyn, Centreville, East St. Louis, Venice and Washington Park. Applicants will be selected on the following criteria that embody the positive ideology of Ina Sledge:
- Strong pursuit of educational goals,
- Strong character and moral fortitude
- Caring, motivated and giving attitude
- Active community involvement
To apply, you will need the following:
- List of activities, community service and honors
- Three letters of reference
- Essay—approximately 500 words, typed and double spaced on your life's ambition addressing the above criteria. Essay should be typed and double-spaced.
Dr. John I. and Constance W. Ades Memorial Award
Connie taught High School English, Latin and French. She later taught English Composition and Homeric Greek at SIUE. Upon retirement she joined the Friends of Lovejoy Library Advisory Board, serving as the Co-Chair of the High School Writers' Contest and also as the Vice-President of the Friends. Jack was one of the pioneering faculty at SIUE. He joined the Southwestern Illinois Campus of SIU in 1958 as an instructor of English Language and Literature in what was then known as the Humanities Division at the Alton Residence Center, just one year after the fledgling university began classes there and at East St. Louis. He became an assistant professor in 1963, and associate professor in 1966 and a professor in 1971, and was named the chair of the English department the following year. He retired in 1990.
The Dr. John I. and Constance W. Ades Memorial Award is given in the spring. There is a $500 stipend with the Award. SIUE, Lovejoy Library student workers, and graduate assistants in good standing, majoring in English are eligible to apply for the Award. Preference is given to Language, Literature and Poetry Majors. Community service hours will also be taken into consideration, especially if they volunteer to help the Friends of Lovejoy Library, the writing clinic or similar groups.

- List of community service activities, and honors,
- A letter of reference from their supervisor or a professor,
- Essay, approximately 500 words, on why they should be chosen and how they intend to use the funds. Essay should be typed and double-spaced.
