IPPE 1st Professional Year Activities
Introductory Pharmacy Practice I: Professional Role Observations (PROS)
Student Academic Level: 1st Professional Year (P1)
The purpose of this entry-level introductory practice experience is to enhance student awareness of the role of pharmacists in various pharmacy practice settings. Students receive several hours of classroom preparation on the course expectations prior to the start date of the experience.
As part of the on-site rotation that can best be described as "sophisticated shadowing," each student:
- maintains documentation of exercises completed and validation of preceptor review
- maintains a task-oriented portfolio
- gives a basic oral presentation
- conducts a small project
PROS is a two-week experience (80 total hours) for P1 students in the fall semester.
Personal & Professional Development (PPD)
PPD is a form of service learning in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities designed to promote student learning and development. P1-P3 students are enrolled in a Personal and Professional Development course sequence to help students build and develop skills related to self-assessment, professionalism, leadership and innovation necessary to becoming a high-quality healthcare professional. Students will participate in didactic as well as experiential sessions in order to gain experience and confidence in a variety of pharmacy practice settings.
IPPE 2nd Professional Year Activities & Dates
Level 2 Introductory Practice
Student Academic Level: 2nd Professional Year (P2)
Level 2 rotations are introductory pharmacy practice experiences in community, health system pharmacy or patient care practices. Students will
- develop distribution and professional communication skills, including patient counseling
- interact with various patient populations
- provide drug information
- participate as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team
- develop sterile preparation skills
- manage a professional project and/or give an oral professional presentation to a small group
These rotations are intended to be more "hands-on" than the entry level P1 Professional Role Observations program.
Students spend three full weeks (120 hours) at a practice site per rotation (one fall rotation and one spring rotation). Generally, students work eight-hour days, Monday-Friday. Preceptors may also utilize alternative schedules that are more conducive to learning at their practice site.
APPE 4th Professional Year Activities
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) Student Academic Level: 4th Professional Year (P4)
The entire P4 year is comprised of APPE. Students complete seven experiences, each lasting five weeks (minimum of 200 hours). There are five required core experiences:
- Community Pharmacy
- Hospital Pharmacy
- Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
- Acute Care/General Medicine Pharmacy
- Senior Project: Research Application for Patient Care
Additionally, students complete three elective rotations that take place in pharmacy specialized practices ranging from critical care, to nuclear pharmacy, to leadership and a host of others. A web-based matching process is used to place students with preceptors and to manage student assessments.
The final element of the APPE program is the senior project rotation during which students design and complete a project in a practice environment that most interests them in cooperation with a preceptor and under the guidance of the research application coordinator who is an SIUE School of Pharmacy faculty member.
Through the development and completion of scholarly projects, students integrate and apply content and skills acquired over the pharmacy curriculum subsequently documenting the achievement of educational outcomes and professional competencies. This project requires a minimum of 120 hours non-concurrent with other APPE rotations. As previously noted, Senior Assignment: Research Application for Patient Care is considered a core APPE rotation.
