Academic Titles and Adjunct Appointments
Fiscal Officers Handbook 1992
For guidance, the following list of titles is made available. The list is not all-inclusive, but covers the majority of faculty titles or ranks used in academic units.
*e.g., Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, Lecturer. **Clinical titles as listed above are approved for part-time faculty in the School of Dental Medicine. Adjunct AppointmentsThe adjunct title is used for persons who are engaged in cooperative work with some agency or department of the University. Usually such persons are full-time employees of an organization other than the University, or of a unit within the University other than the one in which adjunct rank is held. Depending upon qualifications, an individual may be appointed as Adjunct Professor, Adjunct Associate Professor, Adjunct Assistant Professor or Adjunct Instructor. The adjunct classification does not carry with it voting status in the University Faculty or lead to academic tenure. However, persons holding the adjunct title are eligible for library privileges, parking privileges, the purchase of tickets for athletic events at faculty rates and other similar benefits. Adjunct appointments are made on a term basis only. |
