Social Engagement
To be part of the honors community means more than simply attending class. The communities that form in challenging seminars spill into a wider honors community. Honors communities engage and are engaged in the fellowship of bright, driven and curious students from across a diverse spectrum of backgrounds and academic interests. We aim to create an atmosphere in which students can be their true self while establishing meaningful connections with individuals from around the world. Connecting with peers can lead to forming study groups, recreational sports teams, support networks and lifelong friendships. The honors program has several initiatives to foster social engagement.
- Class Size: Honors classes are restricted in size to allow more intimate and insightful conversations among members. Don’t be just another face in a crowded lecture hall; find your voice among peers that will challenge and encourage you.
- Focused Interest Community (FIC): Each year there is an opportunity for a select number of students living on campus to join the honors FIC, wherein all your neighbors are honors students. Surround yourself with similarly high-achieving undergraduate students and bond as a cohort.
- Honors Student Association (HSA): In many respects the beating heart of the honors program, the HSA hosts social and service events, as well as town halls open to honors students to further pursue programmatic excellence. Learn more by visiting the SIUE HSA Instagram page.
- Honors Mentorship: The HSA works to help support incoming honors students by pairing them with an upperclass student who can serve as a mentor, answering questions about the program and the University, helping connect the new honors student to opportunities to flourish while at SIUE.
