More Scholarships for Study Abroad
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers competitive scholarship awards of up to $5,000 for study abroad for U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are or will be receiving federal Pell Grant funding. The study abroad program must be at least 21 days (three weeks) on site (travel days do not count). These grants are most often awarded to students studying in non-traditional locations. Students applying for the Gilman Scholarship are also automatically considered for the Gilman Critical Language Scholarship Award for an additional award of up to $3,000 for specific languages.
The Fund for Education Abroad offers scholarships up to $10,000 for programs of at least 28 days on site. Preference is given to first-generation college students and minority students.
The Insight into Diversity Scholarship is offered by the Insight Into Diversity. Awards of $2,500 are made to first-generation, rural or isolated home location, lower socio-economic communities, living with disabilities, diverse racial and ethnic identities, various religious backgrounds, LGBTQIA and other identity expressions.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Seventy-five, $1,000 grants are awarded each year. A cumulative GPA of 3.75 is required. No need to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students committed to a career in federal service to add an important international and language component to their education. Boren awards help U.S. undergraduate students to study less-commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests but underrepresented in study abroad.
BUTEX offers scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad at a BUTEX-affiliated university in the United Kingdom, including Northumbria University, Swansea University, and programs through FIE in London. The value of each scholarship is £500 and is paid to the selected recipients once they have arrived and registered at the U.K. host university.
The Dr. Ina Stegen Scholarship for Salzburg College of $2,000 is open to students of all majors for their first semester of study abroad at Salzburg College
CEA, Cultural Experiences Abroad, offers several unique CEA scholarship opportunities to students who have applied to or been accepted to a CEA Program. In addition, SIUE students receive a $1,000 discount for semester-long and $500 discount for summer CEA programs.
Each year, AIFS, American Institute for Foreign Study, awards more than $600,000 in AIFS scholarships and grants to deserving students. Funds are available both for summer and semester-long AIFS programs. Additionally, through SIUE’s affiliation with AIFS, SIUE students automatically receive a $400 grant for semester-long AIFS programs and a $200 grant for summer programs.
ISA, International Studies Abroad, offers a number of scholarships as well. SIUE students receive an automatic $200 credit when applying for an ISA program.
Critical Language Scholarships, administered by the US Department of State, is a self-contained fully funded summer program for students of specific languages. In 8 to 10 weeks, students receive the equivalent of a full year of language and cultural study. For the specific languages and application process please see clscholarship.org.
