SIUE Student Fitness Center to Sonic - 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) each way, 4 (6.4 kilometers) miles roundtrip.
Sonic is a fast-food restaurant that serves traditional Midwestern USA favorites like corn dogs along with fun slushies and drink flavors. Sonic has outdoor service and seating making it a convenient and fun stop for a bike adventure. There are many other restaurants and stores to visit in this same area.
Virtual Ride with Dave to see Newt
SIUE Student Fitness Center to Newt the trail art critter – 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) each way, 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) roundtrip.
Newt was super friendly to all that he met. Newt was a family-owned, orange colored, pet cat that spent his days lounging by this section of trail excitedly awaiting to greet and visit with all of the people that came by each day. It was common to see Newt literally sitting on bike seats or in the lap of trail users when they stopped by to visit with Newt. There is an annual memorial event called the “Newt Scoot” where the proceeds support the local human society where he was originally adopted from. Newt has also inspired lots of merchandise that can be found in the community markets including Newt specific apparel, key chains, water bottles and more. Thank you Newt for inspiring an entire community!
Once you make it to Newt, challenge yourself to go visit some of the other “MCT Trail Art Critters”.
Virtual Ride with Dave to the Nickel Plate trail stop
SIUE Student Fitness Center to the Nickel Plate trail rest stop (restrooms and water) by Market Basket – 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) each way, 7.4 miles (12 kilometers) round trip.
The Nickel Plate trail, like most of the trails in this area was originally a railroad track going back to the time of steam engines. This destination takes you to the historic LeClaire area of Edwardsville where an original train station and train facility can be viewed and visited as they have been repurposed while still celebrating their historic presence in this area.
