Therapeutic Injections/Allergy Injections
Health Service provides continuation of medically necessary therapeutic injections that have been initiated and prescribed by your outside healthcare provider. Your prescribing provider retains responsibility for managing your treatment plan, while SIUE Health Service functions as a temporary extension of that office during your time on campus. This service allows students to safely continue their prescribed care while enrolled at the University.
Prior approval is required before services can begin. Approval is not guaranteed and is reviewed individually once all required documentation has been received and verified. Therapeutic and allergy injections are administered Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding university holidays.
Prior to Your Initial Injection Visit
Your prescribing provider must submit the required documentation before any injection can be scheduled. Once all documentation is reviewed and approved, Health Service staff will contact you to arrange your first appointment.
Before your first injection, your medication or allergy serum must be brought in by the student or shipped to SIUE Health Service for verification. Nursing staff will ensure labeling, expiration dates, and documentation match the provider’s orders before treatment begins.
For Therapeutic Injections (such as testosterone or vitamin therapy):
- Completed Therapeutic Injection Order Form
- Relevant medical records supporting ongoing treatment
For Allergy Immunotherapy:
- Completed Allergy Immunotherapy Order Form
- Current treatment records that include:
- Serum contents and concentrations
- Dose and frequency
- Escalation and maintenance schedule
- Instructions for late or missed doses
- Expiration dates and lot numbers
Fax completed orders and records to: (866) 579-9876
Fees for Injections
Payment is due at the time of service.
- $10 for the first injection
- $2 for each additional injection
You may submit your receipt to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
Key Practices
- Orders and serum are accepted only from board-certified allergists or licensed U.S. providers. Serum must be prepared in the United States.
- The first injection in the series must be given in the allergist’s office before SIUE will continue treatment.
- Allergy injections cannot be scheduled until all required documentation and serum have been received, verified, and approved by Health Service staff.
- Injections are not administered unless a physician or advanced practice provider is on site.
- Avoid strenuous activity for one hour before and one hour after your injection.
- A brief screening occurs before each injection to review recent illness, medication changes, or prior reactions.
- Students are expected to remain in the clinic for a minimum of 30 minutes following your injection(s) and report any reactions that occur.
- If you experience throat tightness, wheezing, hives, dizziness, or other symptoms, notify staff immediately or call 911 if symptoms occur after leaving.
- If you experience a serious or anaphylactic reaction requiring the use of epinephrine, you will be transferred to a local emergency facility for further care. All costs associated with emergency care outside of SIUE Health Service are the responsibility of the student.
- Following a severe reaction, student’s next injection must be administered in the allergist’s office before continuation at SIUE.
- Bring your EpiPen to every visit if required by your allergist. If it is missing or expired, the injection will be rescheduled.
- Please allow 30 to 45 minutes for each appointment and arrive on time. Late arrivals may need to be rescheduled to ensure adequate observation after injection.
- Health Service does not change doses or schedules without written instructions from the allergist.
- Students who have not received an injection in over one year must restart treatment with their allergist before continuing at SIUE.
- Health Service may defer or discontinue injections if safety concerns arise, documentation is incomplete, or appointments are repeatedly missed.
