Curriculum Structure
The curriculum spans 12 formal courses (GRPE 681–697) across five training domains, building progressively from foundational knowledge in Year 1 through complex surgical and interdisciplinary management in Year 3.

Research, Board Preparation, & Professional Development
Required Scholarly Milestones
- Year 2 — present at SIU SDM Research Day
- Year 3 — present at the AAP Annual Session (required before certificate completion)
- Year 3 completion — submit a manuscript draft suitable for a peer-reviewed journal
- ABP-format case reviews twice per year (Years 2–3)
- American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Periodontics In-Service Examination (ISE) annually
- Classic and current literature journal clubs running all three years
- Every course maps explicitly to ABP examination domains
- AAP membership expected throughout the residency
- Academy of Osseointegration (AO) membership and annual meeting expected in Year 2
- AAP Annual Session oral presentation required in Year 3
| Note on Board Certification: Completion of this program prepares graduates to meet the eligibility requirements of the ABP examination process. Board certification requires independent application to and examination by the ABP, whose criteria are separate from program completion. The program does not guarantee board certification or ABP eligibility. |
