IE Program Educational Objectives, Outcomes and Enrollments/Graduations (Accredited by the Engineering/Computing Accredidation Commision of ABET)
According to ABET requirements, the assessment process of IE program is designed around the concepts of Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Course Specific Outcomes. The Programs Educational Objectives are broad statements that define the expected characteristics of our graduates in the years after graduation. The course specific outcomes, on the other hand, are the skills and abilities we expect our graduates to have upon completion of a course. The program educational objectives are summarized below.
IE program graduates working for 3 to 5 years in private or public sector organizations are expected to:
- Effectively demonstrate industrial engineering knowledge and skills to enhance value in their organizations,
- Become role models and leaders in their organizations and communities for technical and professional performance,
- Continue to gain new skills and knowledge by pursuing postgraduate studies and additional professional training
These program educational objectives, that were revised in 2015 to incorporate comments from 2014 ABET review, are an engineering-specific extension of the University's mission statement, and are closely aligned with the mission statement for the School of Engineering. In addition, the program educational objectives are mapped to ABET criterion (1) through (7) to demonstrate the relevancy of our objectives with ABET set standards.
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
The program educational objectives are assessed using the alumni and employers every three years. The course specific outcomes are assessed every two years. The program educational outcomes are developed in light of the above objectives and define what our graduates are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. They are the knowledge, behavior, and skills they acquire throughout their time in our program and help us define the course specific outcomes. The program outcomes address problem solving, experimentation, data analysis, cause and effect analysis, documentation and communication in multiple layers of industrial engineering education and encompass all techniques and methods. The course specific outcomes used in the assessment process are relevant and customized versions of these broad outcomes within the context of each specific course.
