Fire & Life Safety
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities Management departments work closely with the Edwardsville Fire, EMS, and Police Departments. This team of professionals has expertise in fire protection equipment, including fire extinguishers and suppression systems, smoke, carbon monoxide, and heat detectors, emergency planning and preparedness, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code regulations involving activities on campus.
EHS provides fire protection, safety, and awareness training to the SIUE campus community. This is accomplished by monthly fire alarm testing, periodic evacuation drills, posting building-specific evacuation route maps, and hands-on fire extinguisher training with the Edwardsville Fire Department. EHS through Facilities Management endeavors to meet the NFPA standards by inspecting fire extinguishers monthly and annually. SIUE inspects and tests fire suppression systems semi-annually, emergency drench showers monthly, and eyewash stations weekly.
