Protocols for Human/Animal Subjects
SIUE uses Kuali Research as the electronic system to submit protocols for projects that involve Human Subjects or research with animals. You also can practice submitting a protocol using Kuali Staging or Kuali Sandbox. Kuali Staging is a resource that allows you to practice with the current KR configuration without notifications being sent. However, the system refreshes every evening so your work is lost. Kuali Sandbox allows you to keep your work, it is rarely updated to the Production configuration.
Human Subjects
Any project that is going to involve Human Subjects must fill out and submit the IRB protocol via Kuali Research using your SIUE e-id and password.
The Kuali Research protocol module uses a progressive display to preliminarily determine which of the four categories your project falls in:
- Not Human Subjects Research
- Exempt IRB Review
- Expedited IRB Review
- Full Board IRB Review
For help on logging into Kuali, or filling out the protocol, check out this step-by-step online tutorial.

Animal Care & Use
In accordance with SIUE Policy 1M10, any faculty, staff and student investigator(s) of any study, project or instructional activity involving live vertebrate animals, regardless of the type of activity or interaction, are required to submit a protocol for IACUC review.
You can submit the IACUC protocol for review via Kuali Research. The deadline for review of all IACUC protocols is the first Wednesday of every month.
