Life Insurance
Term life insurance coverage is provided automatically at no cost to eligible employees through the State Employees Group Insurance Program. This coverage is provided to full-time and part-time employees. Each eligible active employee, regardless of age, is insured for an amount equal to their annual basic salary.
Supplemental Insurance for Cancer, Critical Illness & Accidental Injury
You have the option to supplement your State Employee Insurance Plan to cover cancer, other critical illnesses, and accidental injury. Available coverage includes:
- Cancer insurance to help offset cancer-related expenses that most medical plans may not cover
- Critical illness insurance to complement major medical coverage for a covered critical illness
- Accidental injury insurance to offset associated medical costs
Supplemental insurance is available through Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company.

Plan Features
- Long term disability coverage of 66.67 percent of income up to a monthly maximum benefit of $12,000 with Social Security and SURS offsets
- Benefits begin after the greater of three months of disability or the length of accumulated sick leave
- Partial disability benefits with loss of earnings
- Five-year own occupation definition of disability with 80 percent earnings test
- Benefits paid to age 65 or Social Security normal retirement age
- Two-year benefit for disabilities due to drug, alcohol or mental issues
- Waiver of premium once you begin receiving benefits
- Conversion privilege if you terminate employment

Supplemental Life Insurance
Supplemental Coverage available through Voya.
Employees may purchase Optional Life insurance coverage. All premiums for Optional Life insurance coverage are at the employee's expense. Optional Life insurance coverage choices include:
- Member Optional Life offers coverage up to eight times the Basic Life amount.
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) is available to members in either (1) an amount equal to their Basic Life amount or (2) the combined amount of their Basic and Member Optional Life, subject to a total maximum of five times the Basic Life insurance amount or $3,000,000, whichever is less.
- Spouse Life offers term coverage of $10,000. Spouse Life applies to civil union partners, but does not apply to domestic partners.
- Child Life term coverage provides $10,000 per child. All dependent children age 25 and under are eligible for Child Life coverage, except individuals enrolled in the Other category. Children in the Disabled category are eligible for life coverage as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements.
COBRA: Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act
COBRA is a program that provides temporary extended health, dental and vision insurance coverage to eligible covered members and their dependents when coverage has ended due to certain qualifying events.
