Annual Events
LGBTQIA+ History Month
Safe Zone and The Inclusive Excellence, Education and Development Hub (The Hub), in collaboration with various campus partners, will offer programming in observance of LGBTQIA+ History Month. Programs and events will acknowledge and honor the contributions made by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Some events will highlight the struggles and issues LGBTQIA+ students continue to face in society. This month-long celebration will begin in October and we welcome all students, faculty, staff and allies to help us celebrate and build a sense of community for all LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies.

Rainbow Graduation
Sometimes referred to as Lavender Graduation, Rainbow Graduation is a ceremony conducted to celebrate the achievements of any graduating LGBTQIA+ student.
Dr. Ronni Sanlo designed and implemented the very first Rainbow/Lavender Graduation at the University of Michigan in 1995 after being denied the right to participate in her children’s graduation ceremonies due to her sexual orientation.
SIUE Rainbow Graduation Celebration is…
- An event for you to invite your family, close friends and those most important to you to join
- An opportunity to honor YOU and all you have accomplished while at SIUE
- Your formal induction into the ranks of SIUE LGBTQIA+ and Ally Alumni
- Something you'd ask a favorite professor or staff member who has positively impacted you during your time at SIUE to attend
- The last formal program of the academic year from Safe Zone

Rainbow Welcome Reception
Each semester, The Hub hosts programs to welcome students from traditionally underrepresented populations to campus. The Welcome programs serve as an introduction to specific resources on campus and give students the opportunity to meet and engage with one another in a purposefully inclusive environment. These programs are open to all students. Faculty and staff are invited to attend, as well.
