Preparing for Registration

Just getting started?

  • Review Degree Works
    • Also accessible via the link within CougarNet
  • Verify that your account is paid up through the last term. Contact the Bursar's Office with any questions.
  • If you haven't already, meet with your academic advisor or graduate program director as soon as possible to discuss your enrollment plans. They will also be able to release your advising check-in hold and assist with other registration holds.
  • This is a good time to verify that your address, phone number, and emergency contact information are correct. You may view and update this information by using the Personal Information menu in CougarNet.
Student Declaration of Current Residence and/or Relocation Policy
  • To adjust or verify your current address and personal information, visit the Personal Information menu in CougarNet.
    • Every Student is required to report a correct, current address at the time of registration. Any change of current address must be updated through CougarNet within five business days after the change becomes effective.

    • If the current residence is outside the state of Illinois, and the student is an online student or a student connecting to an online course while physically located outside the state of Illinois, the student should access the authorization page prior to registering for a class or program to verify SIUE’s authorization to offer online courses to a student physically located outside the state of Illinois.

  • For more details, review the Current Resident and/or Relocation Policy - 1Q10.

    • As you build your semester schedule, your course section will populate in the schedule grid based on the days and hours the classes are scheduled to meet. You may also continue to view the list format under the Schedule Detail tab.
    • In the Register For Courses menu option, the Plans tab will allow you to quickly search for sections from your predetermined plan if this has been established with your advisor. To view your full degree plan, access Degree Works.
  • Beginning in summer/fall 2020 registration, students will access the registration module using the following steps,  or visit Class Registration for detailed video instruction.

Mandatory Advisement

You must meet with your academic advisor before you register for courses at SIUE. During that meeting, you will either be enrolled in courses or receive a Course Request Form showing courses approved for registration.

Undergraduate Students

If you are an admitted new freshman, you will receive information about attending New Student Orientation. Additional information is available on our New Student Orientation website or via email at orientation@siue.edu

Undeclared transfer students are required to schedule a one-hour advising appointment with an academic advisor in the Office of Academic Advising. You will receive specific information about your advising appointment that is appropriate for your first term at SIUE.

If you have not applied for a major, contact the Office of Academic Advising to make an appointment, or contact the office at 618-650-3701, Peck Hall room 1315.

If you have been declared into your major program, contact your major department to schedule an advising appointment.

If you wish to enroll in 400- or 500-level courses for later application to a graduate degree at SIUE, you must have the prior approval of the course instructor, the graduate program director and the graduate dean. You must also have submitted an application for admission to classified (degree-seeking) status in the Graduate School before permission can be granted.

Undergraduates who seek permission to enroll in graduate-level courses for graduate credit must be within 16 hours (and not more than one semester) of completing an undergraduate degree. The Graduate Student Request Form (available in the Service Center) is used for this purpose. See the Graduate Catalog for detailed information.

NOTE: Courses numbered 500 or above cannot be applied to an undergraduate degree.

Graduate Students

If you have been admitted to a graduate program, or if you are in classification pending status, contact your major department.

If your status is unclassified non-degree seeking, contact the major department(s) in which the course you wish to take is offered.

Prerequisites

Course prerequisites are published in the course description sections of the undergraduate and graduate catalogs. At an instructor's request, students who have not completed prerequisites can be required to drop a course.

Immunization Requirements

State law requires students born on or after January 1, 1957, who enter Illinois colleges to provide proof of immunization against the diseases of Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus and Diphtheria. Proof of immunity can be provided by having your healthcare provider complete the SIUE immunization form or by attaching a copy of a certified school immunization, military record, or child health immunization record to the SIUE form with Part I of that form completed. Return the forms to Health Service, Campus Box 1700, Edwardsville, IL 62026-1700. Blank forms may be obtained from the Health Service website. Failure to return the completed form will make it impossible for you to register for the next term. A $25 fee is charged to newly enrolled students.

International Student Insurance Requirement

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville established a mandatory health insurance requirement for all international students in 1990. All international students must obtain and show proof of medical insurance every semester of attendance at the University. Failure to provide this proof will result in cancellation of the currently enrolled courses for those international students. Blank forms may be obtained from the Health Service website.

Financial Clearance/Financial Aid Credits

Before we determine financial clearance, The Office of Financial Aid will credit awarded or accepted grants, loans, scholarships and waivers to your account. You are financially cleared and your classes will not be canceled if any of the following occurs:

  1. The credited financial aid reduces your balance to zero.
  2. Your payment plus financial aid credit (actual or anticipated) reduces your balance to zero.
  3. The credited financial aid plus anticipated aid exceeds your charges due. You may check your status via CougarNet.
Your payment covers the first installment plus any prior term debt.

Please note that cancellation may occur on the first bill due date each semester. Students who have not become financially cleared by the first bill due date may be administratively dropped from their classes. Please remember that while the University reserves the right to cancel students for non-payment, it is the student's responsibility to formally withdraw, within University deadlines, from classes they do not intend to complete to avoid financial obligation.
