What is SOAR?
The Student Opportunities for Academic Results (SOAR) program elevates success by offering first-year students academic and professional support. SOAR provides student advising, coordinates academic programs, and makes resources available.
Who is eligible?
While we believe all incoming students could benefit from SOAR, program capacity requires us to limit our enrollment.
As a SOAR student, you will receive
- A "Fresh 101" advising appointment during your first few weeks on campus to go over college success tips and to discuss your transition from high school
- Information about your class options prior to each semester and detailed curricular information from your advisor
- Thorough explanations about any concerns you may have as a new student at SIUE
- Early progress and mid-term reports that your instructors submit to our office
- Guidance on personal matters that may affect your academic performance
- Support in your developmental growth as a scholar and future professional
Who is the staff and how are they involved?
Dr. Earleen Patterson, our director, and Mr. Darryl Cherry, our coordinator of student retention, are both well-versed in student success strategies. Our academic advisors, Sade Shepherd and Sarah Stover, are dedicated professionals who put students first.
Our advisors receive grade and progress reports for SOAR students every semester and are prepared to intervene when necessary to facilitate better-quality coursework and class participation. Our professional staff will help you select and pursue a major that best suits your interests and skills. Our advisors strive to empower you to do your best academically.
All of our SOAR professional staff care about the success of our students and take active roles in your academic development and progress. Read more about each staff member here.
