First Week Checklists
Academic Support
- Chemistry Department Tutoring - Chemistry teaching assistants are available in Science West Room 3040 Monday - Friday to help with any chemistry course.
- Math Department Tutoring - The math apartment has tutoring available Monday - Friday in Science East Room 2234. Click on the link to view the times available.
- Learning Support Services - Learning Support Services provides academic support to SIUE students through a variety of programs. These include: academic development courses, testing services, open-access tutoring centers and many other services.
- Supplemental Instruction Attend SI if your course offers it!!!! SI Leaders offer two to three 50-minute group study sessions a week, and one office hour. Sessions, which are informal, voluntary, and free, offer students an opportunity to discuss important concepts, develop study and test taking strategies, and focus on how to learn with what to learn. Leader office hours provide one-on-one practice.
- Tutoring Resource Center - The Tutoring Resource Center helps students succeed in their courses in a supportive learning environment. Students who need assistance with their SIUE courses are welcome on a walk-in or schedule an appointment.
- Writing Center - The Writing Center exists to help you work on specific parts of the paper that you are struggling with during your composition process.
- Applied Communication Studies Skills Center (formerly Speech Center) The Speech Center is open to all students and is a great opportunity for students to improve public speaking and speech-writing skills.
- Accessible Campus Community and Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) - ACCESS is dedicated to promoting an accessible SIUE campus community to ensure that all students are afforded an equal opportunity to be successful. ACCESS offers a variety of ways to accommodate individual student needs and serves as a bridge between the classroom and the commencement stage.
Social
- Campus Recreation - Campus Recreation offers a wide array of programs and services to meet your recreational style and preferences.
- Campus Organizations - SIUE is home to more than 250 student organizations. Being involved in a student organization will help you develop leadership and citizenship skills. Through student organizations, you will learn the genuine rewards of community service and get more out of your SIUE experience.
- Inclusive Excellence, Education, and Development Hub (The Hub) - Inclusive Excellence, Education, and Development Hub (The Hub) is dedicated to achieving and supporting SIUE’s institutional goal of inclusion which is central to the learning, development and success of our student community. The Hub aims to ensure a campus community that is welcoming, supportive and respectful of all individuals, differences, cultures and diversity of thought.
Health & Mental Health
- Counseling Services - SIUE Counseling Services can help provide short-term assistance for students with a variety of concerns. They operate with the highest ethical standards in an effort to foster psychological well-being and development.
- Health Service - All enrolled SIUE students can be seen in Health Service at no addition charge (it is an included fee in your tuition).
Financial
- Cougar Cupboard - The Cougar Cupboard is a food pantry at SIUE available to current students, staff, and faculty with a valid SIUE ID. Each client can shop in the Cougar Cupboard once a month. The Cougar Cupboard is filled with nonperishable food items and basic hygiene items. Each client receives enough food to feed one person for three days. We have accommodations for single people and large families.
- Federal & State Assistance Programs - check out the brochure for information on SNAP and other food assistance, WIC, Healthcare Coverage, Homelessness, and Child Care Assistance.
- Financial Aid
- It is vital that students complete their 2024-25 FAFSA to apply for federal aid.

Major Exploration & Career Planning
- Career Development Center - The Career Development Center (CDC) assists students by incorporating career counseling and development with cooperative education and internships in a comprehensive program to prepare students to enter the world of work. The CDC is a starting point for students to find valuable career information. As a comprehensive career center serving students and alumni, the experienced staff is here to assist you in all areas of career services.
- Career OneStop - Explore career profiles and videos. Get wages, employment trends, skills needed, and more for many career paths.
- Bureau of Labor Statistics - Provides information on occupation environments, what they do, pay, similar jobs, and other helpful information.
- SIU MEDPREP - The Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program (MEDPREP) is a post-baccalaureate academic enhancement program. MEDPREP has helped more than 1,000 students successfully matriculate into medical or dental schools. MEDPREP provides assistance to educationally and/or economically disadvantaged students, preparing them to achieve success in the health professions.
Military
- Military & Veteran Services is committed to informing, advising and assisting veterans, active military, their dependents/spouses, or survivors to provide the tools and assistance necessary to achieve academic success. You can reach out with questions about benefits, deployment/activation, connecting to resources, and other support.
- Army ROTC - Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) is an elective curriculum taken alongside your required college classes. You will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but when you graduate, you will be an officer in the U.S. Army. You can try Army ROTC without commitment until you contract, which is normally during your junior year.
