Requirements for SAP Tracking
- Required Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) – You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
On a 4.0 scale, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (this is a C average). This is your cumulative GPA, which means all classes that contribute to your GPA are added together to arrive at this final figure. Both the University and the Department of Education require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. GPA calculations do not include transfer classes.
SIUE Academic Policies and Requirements - Required Minimum Completion Rate – You must have a cumulative completion rate of 67% or higher.
Completion rates reflect the pace at which students earn credit for courses attempted. For example – a student earning credit (passing with an A, B, C, D, or P) for 9 out of 12 attempted hours in a semester would have a 75% completion rate for the term. You must pass at least 67% of your overall attempted hours to remain in good standing for SAP. This calculation is not rounded up – a cumulative completion rate of 66.7% is considered below the minimum allowed and you would be placed on SAP Warning.
All classes with grades in the system are included in the completion rate calculations. This refers to classes that have not been dropped before the semester's 100% refund deadline. Classes with grades of A, B, C, D, or P are included in the ‘completed’ figure and all classes (regardless of grade) are included in the ‘attempted’ figure. Transfer classes accepted by SIUE are counted as both 'attempted' and 'completed' in the completion rate calculations.
‘Completed’ hours - divided by - ‘attempted’ hours - equals - completion rate. - Requirement of Maximum Hours – You must complete your degree program before reaching 150% of the published program length.
You are allowed to use financial aid for 150% of your published program length. For example – you have a declared major in Public Health. This major requires a minimum of 120 hours to graduate. You are allowed to use financial aid for up to 180 hours to complete this major/program.
(120 hours required to graduate X 150% = 180 hours)
When you have reached 150% of your current program’s published length, then your financial aid is Terminated for Maximum Hours. In certain cases (most often a change of majors), you can file an appeal for re-evaluation of hours/Grad Plan Appeal to see if your aid can be reinstated.
How Often is SAP Checked?
SAP is evaluated at the end of each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). The system automatically updates a student's SAP status, which is then verified. It will be updated (if necessary), and the aid for the following semester will be adjusted accordingly. Please allow us a few days after grades are posted to finish verifying your new SAP status.
