Before You Arrive
Please read through the Visiting Scholar Handbook and Pre-Arrival Checklist below. You should have all of the items on the checklist completed prior to arriving on campus for your visiting scholar orientation.
You should make your travel arrangements so that you arrive on campus in time to begin your program by your DS-2019 start date. We look forward to meeting you soon.

J Scholars/Interns
- Read the Visiting Scholar Handbook (above) and Exchange Visitor Program Welcome Brochure.
- Receive your DS-2019 document from SIUE and check that all information is correct. Email iss@siue.edu if you have questions regarding your initial DS-2019 document.
- Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee online.
- Schedule your visa appointment at the U.S. consulate and obtain your exchange visitor visa.
- Make travel arrangements to arrive on campus so that you will be able to begin your program by the start date on your DS-2019.
- Make housing arrangements and pay any associated fees.
- Watch for emails from your International Advisor who will schedule your mandatory on campus orientation.
- Bring your immigration documents with you in your carry-on luggage: Passport, visa, DS-2019, SEVIS fee receipt.
- Inform your Host and International Advisor of any proposed program date changes. If you will be entering the U.S. after your program start date, your Host will need to complete the Amend Program Dates form and submit a new letter of invitation to the Office of International Affairs. You may need to receive and travel with a new DS-2019.
