Welcome to the Black Scholar Experience
Scholarly Connections. Rewarding Engagements.
The SIUE Black Scholar Experience (BSE) is a comprehensive academic program to promote belonging, academic advancement and degree completion. Upon enrollment, all participating students are assigned to a Scholar Village (SV) or learning community. Students will complete several general education courses together as a cohort and engage in robust co-curricular programming as they select courses of study and establish a collegiate foundation.
The array of programming will:
- include enrollment in ENG 125 (Introduction to Black Literary and Cultural Studies)
- facilitate connections and relationship building
- reinforce and expand academic experiences of large numbers of students
- introduce novel approaches to acquiring and producing knowledge
- alleviate the challenges of navigating a PWI (predominantly white institution)
- connect students to scholarly spaces (i.e., library and STEM Center)
- engage student scholarly and academic interests
